My little girl seems to be wheezing, or coughing a little more than I would like for her to be doing. Its NOT constant.... but just a little here and there... I am just not used to hearing a dog do this.  Poor thing.

I know she has had a kennel cough vaccination probably 3 or more times... I will have to check her records... but I know it is atleast 3 times. She is only 21 weeks old. The breeder gave her a k.c. vaccine. Her first owner after the breeder gave her one. I am her second home, after the breeder,  and I gave her one too about a month ago before I unfortunately had to board her to go to a funeral.

any ideas?  She and her big sugar daddy to the right are long coats... maybe she's coughin on Rama's fur?.... she is always trying to pull it out, and restyle it for him!  :)

thanks,

Jacob, Rama and Akeelah

kennel cough vaccine is not 100%  the Bordetella virus is incredibly complicated.

  • A cough - which sounds like a "honk" and owners often think the dog has something stuck in its throat.
  • Occasionally the dog will cough up mucus.
  • A discharge down the nose
  • Difficulty breathing
  • If pneumonia occurs as a complication the disease can even be fatal.

benylin works quite well but you must visit your vet

3 or 4 kennel cough vaccines for a dog just 4 months old? Did I understand you correctly? Be very careful with that, you are asking for major trouble by bombarding your puppy with so many vaccinations.  Educate  yourself on how many and which vaccinations dogs need. Google - dogs and vaccinations. 3 are way, way too many for a 21 weeks old puppy. Find a boarding kennel that doesn't require kennel cough vaccines.

Agree with tigermouse.

i never bother with the KC vaccine as i have done a lot of research into this subject, the vaccine is unpleasant ans in some cases only 40% accurate.

a pup of that age should not be exposed to this amount of vaccine and i bet my bottom dollar if it is KC then it was excessive amounts of vaccine that have done it.

has she been wormed to date?

We see kennel cough twice a year in my dog daycare, just a few cases, but it's always in vaccinated dogs.  Too many different things can cause "kennel cough" symptoms while the vaccine only vaccinates against one type.  If your dog was just boarded,  I'd bet she has kennel cough regardless of your vaccine history (or like someone else mentioned, because of....).   Usually it's mild around here though,  couple days of coughing/gagging with no change in appetite or activity. Then it clears up.  Call your vet,  as they will each have a different protocol, from "wait and see" to "put her on antibiotics just in case".

That is a lot of vaccine for a young puppy. Take her to your vet, since she may have picked something up at the boarding kennel. Let us know what the vet says please.
