i know that the normal gestation is around 63 days what i was wondering is,

what is the earliest you have see, or heard of, pups being born and still live?  what problems were associated with earlier birth, and how did you handle the issue?

what about females that carry longer?  i know you have to worry about pups being larger and having trouble birthing natural, but what other issues have you come across?

I have had a bitch have pups on her 59th day.  she was bred 1 time, and had 11 pups, all of which survived.  I thought she would have whelped on day 57, but she was able to make it to the 59th.

I've also had whelping take 24 hours from 1st pup born to last pup born.

latest, I knew of a kennel that bred Cairns, a bitch was 2 wks overdue and was rushed to the vet (her belly started to literally split open), pups were dead and taken by c-section.  the pups had teeth coming in and eyes were open. this was a very poor, mean breeder who didn't care about her animals.  this is not heresay, I personally saw this happen. another female, here, a westie had severe mastitus and she still wouldn't take the dog to the vet.  the dog was severely hot to even touch.  She wanted the kennel help to hold her down for pups to nurse on her, I jerked the dog up and took her to the vet at my own expense, then was threaten with theft charges after the dog was healthy.  this is a breeder who has sold dogs to famous baseball stars, and senators. disgusting person.

I have a bitch with her first litter whelped 3 puppies on day 58 of which 2 survived.

Another bitch delivered 2 healthy puppies on day 69, she visited the vet every day from day 63 but he was not concerned.

A friend of mine had a litter of three Chihuahuas 3 weeks ago. The female was apparently mated 8 day in a row. The first pup was normal at around 118 gramms. The second was only 63 gramms and looked like E.T. with protruding eyes and no hair when he was born. The third was 42 gramms and died the next day. Now after three weeks E.T. has nearly caught up on size and is a real looker. His eyes have just opened, a week later than his big sisters, so we think he was concieved a good week after his sister. It's great to see that he wants to live. My friend didn't have to bottle feed him. He's a fighter!

You need to count from the day the bitches progesterone goes over 5 in order to have an accurate due date.   Pups born on or after day 58 have the greatest chance for survival.

My earliest has been day 58... mixed results. I had a girl go to about day 65 or so and lost the whole litter, will never let that happen... 58 -63 days is completely normal

I am a control freak, i plan everything.. if something different happens, i have another plan

My dog had her second litter at 58 days...nine pups..all survived.  In fact my Bodie Boo is with me today out of that litter and my mom has his brother.  Now Bonsai was very small but survived on his own without help.  He just didn't grow as large as the others.

everyone, when you say day 58, is that from your first mating or last?  how many times do you normally breed your dog, and how many days do you normally wait between matings?

My bitch that delivered on day 58 only had one mating,

She was staying at the stud's kennels and they did the testing

day 12 progesterone was 1ng -

day 14 result was 11ng

day 16 result was 30ng and she was mated on that day resulting in only 3 puppies.

I believe the stud owner should have tried day 14 & 15 for a mating.
