I have a 8.5 month old Showline male that I'm hoping to show and title myself.  I am new to showlines.....I bought 2 males about the same age at the same time.  And they both have COMPLETELY different coats from each other (different bloodlines).  My other male has a sleek, shiney nice coat and the male that I have a question about seems to have SOO much more hair...much thicker and a different feel to it.  The issue is that the hair on his back towards his rump is wavy and sticks straight up.  I didn't show him this weekend like I was planning to because he STILL has this hair issue and I didn't want to embarrass myself or him..lol, and my other pup started limping.  It's much worse after getting a bath....so I stopped the bathing ...he hasn't had a bath in over 4 months, so it's a bit calmer.  I rake it every day.........any other suggestions?????   My plan with him was for show, schutzhund and hopefully later breeding...but is this a trait that can be possibly passed on??  He is not a long hair, but does have a thicker, heavier coat when compared to my other boy.  I'm assuming this is a fault and he would get penalized in the ring for it??

There are different types of coat, sometimes even with littermates. But, without photographs it would be difficult for any of us to determine.

His coat looks gorgeous in that pic! Its what I would call plush. I had a female that had a wave over her croup about that age but has she grew it sort of just went away. Nice looking boy! Whats his background?

I think it is a good coat, and perhaps the "defect" you describe is nothing more than a "cowlick". I have a dog who has a very correct coat, but with a wave in that area, and just accept it as it is.

Best Regards,

I agree with the other comments. Nothing wrong with the beautiful guy's coat. From the pic, it looks like he might have some of his puppy coat left.  Don't go overboard with his coat.  Every dog is different. Every line is different. This is NOT a defect or a fault in his background or lines, and he would not have been penalized by a judge if shown. Look at the coat of his Sire, Ingodd's Albert... he has a BEAUTIFUL coat.

I know the breeder of this dog, personally. Amy is a GREAT person who really tries hard to improve the GSD,  each time she does a breeding, and is constantly researching bloodlines to produce the HEALTHIEST pups possible.

Thanks everyone for your comments.  That picture was taken at 7 months of age and he's now 8 months and even more handesome =)  You can't see it really well in this picture.  I'm hoping it will go away eventually, but wanted suggestions in helping it progress a little faster!  I received him PMS on little things that I can try.  Yes his father is Ingodds Albert (Ghandi son) and he has a gorgeous coat!!  This is an amazing boy and I'm very excited about him, he has the drives to match his looks =)  One of the best dogs I've ever had....really nice temperment!!

Allison

First off he is still young and his coat will probably change a bit more before he is mature.   Second, go ahead and show him, get the opinion of a judge who can see him up close and personal.  Then ask for opinions from those who are there first hand in person from your area who might be more familiar with how that judge see's things.  Sadly no two judge's are the same.  And the proof is in the pudding, put him out there and don't be shy.

First off...this dog is an Albert son...anyone who has seen Albert and/or Ghandi knows the coat. My female...his mopther...also in the database, has quite the opposite.

I have 2 sisters here and one has the identical hair issue. It is  a young dog with a Beautiful but DRY coat. With a coat like this, they need supplements, and not to be bathed ALL the time. He has spikey tips down the spine...NOT something we try to breed out or in. It is not a fault!!!!

You should show him. How many people are out there at shows with their mousse and hair spray and so forth.

I chose Albert as my female didn't have a great coat. This was to improve it and as I see it did just that. And by the way....I have not thrown a coat dog yet!!!! And would be more than happy with a dog of his quality!!!!

I know Julie has told you how to fix this and also told you it is not a fault. And she knows the coats for sure. I would trust her opinion and do what she suggested.

And lastly...this dog is young. He still has to get his full coat in. I am thinking about 2 you should see all that is going to be...but not before then.
