hate it.. It breaks the hair ends and is not comfortable for the dog. Definately not for a dog who is being shown

My dogs are just the opposite...they start the happy dance when they see me get it out.  Agreed that it's not good for show coats.

I was wowed by the demos and bought one. It reminded me of the shedding blades the horse people use. Sure looked like it removed a lot of hair.  Maybe I did something wrong but it broke the ends off the top coat!  Made the coat look dull.  It took weeks to grow back in properly and shine again!  Now it sits on the shelf unused beside the much loved  rake.

IMO save your money for something else.

I use the furminator regularly on dogs at the shop. The biggest thing you HAVE to make sure the dog is clean, right after a bath and totally dry, cannot be damp at all. Another thing you can use to help the shedcoat, Get a lava stone at the feedstore, some places use them to clean the grill, ummmm cant think of the other name for it right now, horse people use it also, you just wipe it over the coat and it grabs the shed hair also. Right now my green carpet is gray with GSD hair lol I need to take her to the shop and groom her, just havnt had the time.

I love mine! I have seven GSDs so have to have something that gets a lot of hair off fast. Never had a problem with it breaking the hair...you can't use it as roughly as a rake or brush...you don't need to. Short, soft strokes get a lot of hair off, just like on the demo video. My dogs love it...can be hard to use it sometimes, only because it feels so good to them that they do the "leg thing" like they are scratching, wiggle around so I'll get certain spots, etc. When I get done, it looks like I've been shearing multi colored sheep in the yard! Better than have all that hair in my house! I love it...it saves me tons of time.

If not a FURminator - then what is recommended?  Some people love them.  Some people hate them.  Several people here said they aren't good for the top coat.

Thanks

I like the Furminator and use it often, I like my plain old undercoat rake as much if not more.
