what do you guys know about the reality of this
back home we ridded all pet stores of selling pups and got rid of puppymills by educating the public now i moved to pa and omg its sooo bad here i have talked with a couple folks they didnt even have a clue what puppy mill means so yes I think education of getting across that basically pup from breeder pet quality is same price as pet store crud dog without the health issues and costs if you let them know this they tend to listen most of our sucess was after the media began busting puppy mills and showing pictures and explaining it though i am one of the first to not trust the media as they also purposfully do harm to breeds. anything they can make an evil sensation from right or wrong. but educating is the key about the future costs of crud dogs medical expenses!! now you will have folks go balistic on limited registration cause to them if the pup has ack papers it has to be good bull That is a whole new kettle of fish to get me steamed folks just because akc says its a dog dont believe it papers are substituted all the time do your homework on breeder and dogs!
In the USA, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is the agency for regulating puppy mills. Not some person on a message board upset that someone is selling pups in their local pet market area and getting the money that they feel should be theirs for selling their pets in the same market. Most complaints in this area are more of jealousy than true wrong doing. After all a puppy peddler is nothing more than someone upsetting you because they are selling more pups than you. Even if you are full of yourself and your self believed quality of your animals. Whatever you got to tell yourself to get through the night and live with yourself.
For everyone else, the term "puppy mill," coined in the USA during the mid-to-late sixties to describe large scale dog breeding facilities, has only recently arrived in the mainstream vernacular. It is a term that some claim is sensational and manipulative. The word "mill" refers to an operation that churns out puppies in mass.
Now we all know some pretty popular kennels that fit that description, and they breed and sell our chosen breed. They sell many puppies from many litters a year. You all can think of many kennels doing this. By definition, they are all puppy mills.
The current system in the USA allows the continuation of a business that makes money from breeding and selling. The regulations were written with the intention of ensuring the proper care, feeding, housing, and veterinary care for the thousands of dogs found in puppy mills across the country. Mandated by law to enforce these regulations is the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Got a problem, rather than whine and cry on a message board, that some other breeder is selling more puppies than you, call your USDA inspector, giving proper information so you can be inspected too.
Then, leave it alone. To many well-to-doers being everyone else's business that is none of their concern is a major problem in the United States.
Hope you are proud of your self!
Dawnmarie: I looked up the site and I guess it is about People Magazine featuring a young entrepreneur who is in actual fact being supported by his mother and they are running something termed as a Puppy Mill. I did not see the article. The Petition is to People magazine to do an article on Puppy Mills instead. I don't think that they will but one of the commentaries on the site was good: that they should do an article on celbrities who have adopted rescues.
Martin: I don't know why you are so upset and at whom. Surely you realize the horrifying statistics in the USA relating to the throw-away commodity, dog. AKC did a study a few years back and came to the statistic that only 1 puppy out of 3 stays in its original home by the end of 12 months.
GSD Newbie: You are so right. The only way to create change is through education and I will add training. So few people seem not to realize that a dog requires socialization and rearing. Pet stores certainly don't help the situation where an animal is purchased from the shelf and the owner is sold additional dog paraphenalia (great business) to someone who has never owned a dog before. There is no follow-up on the animal. The animal gets lost somewhere in the statistic. The statistics of euthanized dogs on the Petition site is horrifying. 4-6,000,000 pets are euthanized in the USA each year.
A civilization will be judged by the way cares for its charges.
Martin, you are somewhat correct.USDA is on a fed. level you forgot about the state level
Thank you Martin - education of the public is the only
way to slow them down !! All it takes is to see a (sickly) puppy behind bars in a petshop with a sign that says ON SALE - FOR $900. and somebody will want to SAVE IT -- and FIX IT. My vet told just such a person to DESTROY a 12 week old HUSKY puppy from a puppy mill, obviously, because he coldn't see taking about $2,000 from her over the next 12/18 months trying to treat problems that would never be fixed !!
not to mention the dog suffering. There is some little nurse gene in some people - they have to have a sick something or other at all times -- to fix it !!
Guess it elevates them to some superior position (in their crazy mixedup heads, anyway).
Sunshine, darling, the AKC should be thrilled if
dogs 66.6% of pups are changing hands each year -
if they're getting their papers transferred as well - think of al the revenue for the AKC !! I think this figure is a lot of bunk -- Show us the facts and data to support it. I have records on about 100 puppies
and I can say that 98 of them were in their original home at 12 months of age - and way beyond that -- like
12 YEARS of age !!
Bless you heart, you obviously do a far better job of screening your puppy buyers than does the average pet shop, BYB, or puppy wholesaler. All they care about is - show me the money. Your record clearly demonstrates the outcome of matching up the right dog to the right owner. I would think you would be one who would take back a dog you bred that is no longer wanted? How many do that?
I live in Amish country where we are bombarded with what I consider puppy mills. These are Amish farmers who breed dogs in the winter months to suppliment their incomes. So far they have totally destroyed the reputation of the Akita, the Sibe, the St Bernard, the Lab, the Golden and the GSD and are currently working on the more rare breeds like Shar Pei, Shiba, and the Preso Canario. The Preso became quite popular in PA after the conviction of the owners of the 2 that killed a woman. Can you think of a better reason to want a dog than it might be able to be trained to be a killer?
Here in PA our dog laws are enforced by the PA Dept of Agriculture. PA has primacy over the FDA. Not all states have that primacy and are governed at the federal level. We also have a marvelous organization known as the PA Federation of Dog Clubs. With their assistance, the PA dog law officers do a pretty damned good job all thing considered. At least in the Lancaster County area. Kougar mught have a different outlook on what goes on in his area of this state. Briefly, if you register or transfer more than 26 dogs per year, you must have a kennel license which subjects you to unscheduled inspections. The officers do make those surprise inspections and many a kennel has been fined to the max and/or closed down. It's much easier to get results at a state level that at a federal one. he vact is the law cannot prevent anyone from earning a legal living and as long as puppy mill operatore keep correct records, clean their kennels once a day, don't starve their dog and don't cheat on their AKC registrations, they are legel. Also wothy of mentioning, some of the Amish breeders are no longer using AKC to register their dogs, they are using something they call AKA or something similar. The general public is ignorant about dogs, they think that makes them purebred. Look how mahy pais $600 for cock-a-poos with the promise they would soon be recognized as purebred.
I don't agree that most of us who are against puppy mills feel that way due to jealousy, we just don't like to see so many unwanted dogs abused and/or killed every year. GSD's are not immune, some of you might recall just last year at this time aronnd 160 GSD's and some Malinois were confiscated in a cruelty case in the Great Lakes ares. I doubt the people responsible for shutting down that operation did it out of jealousy. Frankly, I don't doubt for one minute that Sunshine's statistics are correct, I've seen similar numbers myself. I'll try to find the exact numbers.
I do agree that it is hard to define "puppy mill", personally I don't think it has all that much to do with the number of dogs on site and puppies bred as it does to the way the dogs are placed with no regard for their welfare or the buyers' mind set about dogs. I'm not sure if there even is a legal definition.
It's a sad situtation with no real solution in sight.
Trust me, if you have ever seen a true puppy mill you know it.
The USDA also inspects and governs the animals including dog used for experimentation so if they have that job what puppy mill would bother them? Puppy millers rarly keep the animals clean they never get pet they never hear a word of praise some are closed in barns to never see daylight!! they live, eat, sleep, and gice birth on mounds of feces! the dogs are bred from six months old till they die. Most that are recovered from busts are humanely put down as they have never heard or felt kindness and cannot not enure it. Anyone who sells litter to pet store for lump fee in my book is a puppy miller to not select or ask where and what the puppy will spend his life doing. I do not breed I am surly not jealous when I did have a litter here or there I can to this day pick up the phone and speak to the families those dogs have been a life time with! None of my dogs ever developed physical or mental instability and I know this because I didnt dump them after they were weaned when I raised a pup it was followed it's whole life how else would you know your breedings were sound? thats just it a puppy miller doesnt care how the pups turn out they have their cash!!!! They dont care they breed them if they can physically get sperm to egg in puppy resulting even using dog with one testicle, blind dogs do to inherited disease, they even use dogs that have inherited disabilities after all they still reproduce yeah it gets passed on to the puppies but what does a puppy miller care? As a human being this is beneath contempt to comit this crime look that child in the face that begged parents for that puppy in the cage when they have to be told how ill and poor bred their new family member is and that they have to be big and kill it for its own good!!
