A good GSD has certain desirable traits and it does not matter which line it is from. Depending on what a owner wants the GSD to do will direct what line you buy from and the pedigree. Most pet people are better off buying a good quality show line pup with average to even below average drives. The major differences come from people who want to compete in show, sport etc all the way to police K9 and guard dogs. Back to my first statement all GSD should have good nerves, drive, conformation, athletic ability, pigment and so on. If you breed for extremes and/or one certain trait such as color you can easily loose the desirable traits every GSD should have. To insult either line shows a lack of knowledge as we have many excellent breeders. But no question we have many poor breeders who are producing terrible quality, you can see them trying to dump many of them on this database and even asking top dollar for them from an un0informned buyer.

hey fireman, well i'm torn on breeding my SHOW male(yasko son) to my WORKING female(DDR/Czech). or just sticking with breeding her to a working male. everyone i see, wants a puppy out of either one of my dogs when they see them. and they don't work (have no titles) but are trained for personal protection, which most of the public (IMO) are looking for. almost everyone who comments on my dogs in public, i try to educated, and go on about titles, hips, temperment, Schutzhund---(which they have NO clue what it is)and so on. and the more i look, even on this site, some of the combinations WORK. you get a goodlooking GSD with a stable temperment. i just want to see them in HOMES not sitting in kennels.

Very interesting discussion. I am myself in the process of buying a combination working/show line pup from Vom Haus Miller German Shepherds. I originally told Steve I wanted a working line dog and he thought that might be too much for me to handle. My current dog serves as my Psychiatric Service dog, is a retired showdog with dysplasia, son of Ursus Von Batu, and very calm as well as drop dead gorgeous. People's jaws just drop when they see him. His price before dysplasia was $8,ooo. I got him for free. Anyway, fate would have it that the litter available when my money is available is a combination breeding, with the sire a great nephew to my dog thru Ursus. The pups are all show quality and though I would have been content with pet quality I am willing to pay for show quality because the beauty is so addicting. I saw my therapist today and he basically argued with me about what I am paying for this puppy. They are priced at $1,500 and I am getting 15% discount for taking Nenz from them and giving him a loving home. I finally admit I love this sweet, gentle boy even though the best dog I ever loved was a lab/shepherd/husky mix who died January 16, 2006. I have been afraid to love another dog like I loved her. But a good dog has a way of just sneaking into my heart.........

Fireman, what a shame! I'll bet it was related to her work at the WTC. The handlers all had masks: the dogs didn't! I heard of one dog who almost died when his nose and breathing passages became totally clogged with dust. Horrible conditions for the dogs!
