I'm considering breeding my working line bitch to a showline male. My female has a good prey drive, and crazy ball drive. She has good hips, ect ect. The male I'm considering breeding her to is an import from Hungary, he has his IPO3 and KKL1. Have any of you guys ever done anything like this? I've never done a show/work cross so I don't know how it will turn out.

GSDguy08,

Mixing show/work is not uncommon.  As long as you understand both of the lines you should be fine.  As for turning out it runs the gammit from crap to excellent.  Sorry but this type of question has many variables and to be specific would be wrong.

http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/470350.html There is the males pedigree, and here is my females pedigree  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/511527.html        I may or may not do this cross. She is in heat right now, but not ready to breed. I may end up breeding her to a SchH 2 titled male who is fairly close by. He is a Troll Milinda son, and the bottom half of his pedigree has a lot of KNPV titled dogs.

i have been told when doing an outcross that you should really look long and hard at the parents.  what are their strengths and weakness.   in the end, cross your fingers and hope for the best.

just out of curiosity, who is the sch2 male?

you can only try.  we got intelegent and gud looking dogs but i supose we were lucky the only problem we have had was placing them they have a strong drive so try volhard testing them @5 and 7 wks just to be on the safe side.

It's been done more then you think. My family has been doing it for generations. You still have to take both animals as 2 halves of a whole. Look at your female and be honest with her faults. Then write them down. Then take and do the same for the male. After you have done this, look and see if they line up on their faults. If so how many times?

Next write down each of their best qualities according to what you like. In an order of importance to you and potential buyers. Check your list and see how these qualities stacked up in comparison to your list of faults.

Realize that where they double up on strenghts and weakness and be darn sure they have more  good then bad traits or that they offset each others faults.

Likes beget likes is the rule of thumb. The otherside of that coin is likes do not always beget likes. Breeding soundness from nose to tail is a well thought out plan and a bit of luck !!!  It is how experienced breeders try to eliminate to many recessive genes from lining up when line breeding. They will normally linebreed to set type. Then outcross to increase size and improve temperment.

Just my opinion for what it's worth. Sometimes it's better to be lucky then good!

Hmm, apparently I won't be breeding to the Troll Milinda son. So I've been told that I'm a puppy mill type person. I guess having two litters of four in your whole lifetime makes you that huh?
