30 world class competitors will come from as far as Asia and Europe, as well as from throughout the United States to participate and showcase the tremendous abilities and athleticism possessed by this most noble of breeds. This historical event will take place June 6 through 8, 2008 in New Egypt, New Jersey USA and each phase will be judged in an Olympic- style manner by three judges.

A $10,000 Cash Prize will be awarded to the winner.

In addition to the Schutzhund competition, working k9 in law enforcement, search and rescue dogs and therapy dogs will demonstrate the total versatile German Shepherd.

We truly believe that this celebration of the German Shepherd dog will foster community relations, awareness and a greater cognizance of man's best friend. In addition, we hope that this will be the first of a continuing event and that in ensuing years, other nations will seize the initiative to host the tournament.

What organization (if any) is behind this event?  How do competitors qualify or how are they selected?  Who selected the judges/helpers?    By Olympic style judging, do you mean all three judges will score all dogs in all phases and an average will be the final score or ???  Sounds interesting.  More info please!

Diane Seaman

 Finally!

My understanding is that this is an "Invitational."   I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that it is being hosted by Carlos Rojas, not sanctioned by an organization.  Although how the judges from different organizations will be able to judge, unless it is sanctioned by an organization, I don't know.   Pierre Wahlstrom (Sweden) is one of the judges, Mike West is another.  No idea who the third will be.

It would be a great event to spectate, if the "usual suspects" are going to compete.  A bit too far afield for me, though.

Unsure how competitors from abroad are going to get here in June!!!? It is pretty damn hot by then in regards to shipping...

This has been tried before in the past. Some have tried to have $$$ Purses but USCA would not be part of it if I remember correctly....

This event sounds promising. I've always thought that important SchH competitions s/d be judged by a team of judges simultaneously just like in boxing or figure skating. If it is not sanctioned by any organization doesn't matter, and might even be better because politics are minimized. Though rare, events like these have been held before, especially in Europe. Typically you get a wealthy individual who is also a GSD enthusiast that puts up the prize money or even pays for top competitors' airfare, etc. I know of one actual billionaire from the Forbes 400 list that is a working line GSD/SchH enthusiast and for people like him,  10k is peanuts. Hopefully we get more events like these.

Who cares if it is not sanctioned! This sounds fantastic. Kudos to Carlos Rojas for having the guts to do this.

This is awesome!  I think all National trials should have Olympic style judging.  I like the limit of 30 dogs as well, perhaps should be 20.  Perhaps going forward top 5 finishers at the Nationals would get an invite, then the invisibile hand can pick the rest.  I hope this becomes an annual event.  Maybe ESPN will pick it up.  Maybe there will interviews on Sports Center.  Let the trash talking begin, HA!  Your dog does a sit and bark like a lab.  Your dog couldn't get its fat ass over the A-frame.  WOW!

Yes, $$$ for events was tried before, with the defunct Schutzhund League. USA correctly did not permit USA judges to participate as judges. That did not stop RETIRED judges from doing so. The "concept" crashed of its own accord. It was not an "invitational" presumably of the "best and brightest." It was just street racing for dogs with money as the catalyst. Money + dogs = disaster.

by DDRshep on 18 January 2008 - 00:01

I understand where money + dogs can be a disaster. But it sounds like the old Schutzhund league was set up with the dreams of becoming a  professional sports league like the NFL, NBA, Major Leagues, etc. but SchH is never going to be a spectator sport. It doesn't look like this is the intention with this invitational or I hope that it is not. 10k is not a lot of money, much more money than that changes hands at the BSZS. Even now people already abuse and exploit dogs, cheat and engage in politics just for ego even when there is no money involved. So I hope the sponsor is actually a wealthy individual who just likes GSDs instead of corporations. If it is corporate sponsored then the cheating and politics could eventually become the same as in those Eukanuba sponsored AKC dog shows etc.
