Just wondering if anyone has any information on a GSD named Greif III.

Sire was Horand v Siegestor, was born probably in the late 1800's?

Not sure if this dog was registered with the SV or was one of the foundation lines.

Any info would be appreciated!

Julie

He was registered in the SV - wen I get my email working I can send you a picture (its buried somewhere underneath 2000 or so emails O.o) - there is one of him in the very FIRST copy of the GSD in Word and Picture (untranslated).  He was a White dog.

I found the sire Horand on Winsis but Greif is not in his progeny list.  The D.O.B. for Horand is 1909.

Hi Cate,

I have the picture of Greif III... I was wrong about his sire, it's not Horand v Siegestor. I mixed him up with another dog.

I know that Greif & Greif II (both white) were mentioned in the history books as appearing at a sheep herding trial in the late 1800's. I'm wondering if this Greif III was a relation to I and II? And was Greif I actually Greif Sparwiessen?

I have access to the first copy of the GSD in Word and Picture (untranslated). One of the colleges near me has the book in their special collections. Unfortuantly I can't read German, but do know someone that knows someone that could translate it. The college allows me to take digital pictures of the pages, which is really neat!

Just wondering if there is any other reference to this Greif III out there?

Hey Julie - I pulled an oops .  I mixed him up with Berneo....I hae read refrences to greif III online - and there is a picture of him in my copy of the book, but his name was omitted.  I think there were alot of funny looking GSDs back then though because my book goes into spotted dogs as well O.o

lol - I spent hours last semester going through early editions of the J.Hered...There is an article in one of them I think you'd like...I will have to find those and send them too you :)

How about the "Greif Rude" entry?  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/486639.html

Being "rude" is a term for certain types of dogs, used early, it seemed often tacked onto the name as a description, not a real name.

There was another possibly interesting Greif listed, whelped 1926 I think.

<<How about the "Greif Rude" entry>>

I'm not really sure who this is. One of his listed progeny was Madame Rude, I'll have to check my database at home, as I know I have all these dogs linked up. But you may be on to something there!

Is Greif Sparweissen the same dog as the "Greif" that is listed in the history books? Was Sparweissen added on later to distingush the kennel or owner? (Wish I had a time machine!!)

Next time I go to the college library I'll have to pull one of the old German bloodline books. This book had all the foundation dogs with pedigrees. I looked at it last time but not in depth. Figures!
