How can a person go about trying to track down a registered dog's owner?

For example, is there a way to track down who imported a GSD with SV papers? ...if the dog was ever registered with the AKC?

I adopted a female, and was given a copy of what is supposedly her German papers.  However, it's looking very much like the papers are not for this female.  It's all complicated by the fact that this female's original owner passed & his family surrendering her to a shelter.  The shelter cannot provide info on who surrendered her, and the papers I have are what was given to the first family who adopted her.

I'm not finding a tattoo on her, and from the research I've done, the breeder on the papers would have done everything by the book.

I've tried looking up my male, who is AKC registered, but don't find him anywhere.  I can find the female I have the copies for in the Pedigree Database, but it all ends at her.

Any suggestions or advice?

If the owners passed they no doubt had papers filed somewhere. Could very easily been to a different dog they owned at the same time or in the past. Check the date of birth on the paper and ask your vet how old they think your dog is. Do these numbers add up to something even possible? Family may have the wrong papers as they didn't know. They found papers and just assumed they belonged to the dog on the premises.

Good wake up call to any dog owners that don't have people informed about what to do with your dogs should something happen! Make sure somebody knows what your dgs are worth, what the best homing option would be for them and what paperwork goes to what dog.

Maybe if you list the name of the dog, someone who knows her or the situation can email you.  ;)

Chances are they never did a transfer to the AKC. Does all the info on the SV papers match the dog, ie colour, approx age etc? The dogs breeder would be a place to start researching her. He is listed on the front of the SV papers, look where it says Züchter, under the DoB. You could also send DNA to the SV in Germany to see if she is the dog that is listed on these papers, you should do that anyways if you cannot make out the tattoo. But I would start with the breeder first, because he might know who bought the dog in the US. Or may be able to refer you to the person who sold the dog to the US. Language may be an issue. Knowing who the dog on the papers is would be a good start for anyone here trying to help you. The name or SZ number.

The name I have on the papers is Pixy vom Harztor, breeder being Jorg Sauer.

As for the papers, color is a match, we have not been able to find an ear tattoo.  The vet seemed to think it would be hard to decide for certain her age, 3 or 5, but I do know that this female has had at least two litters of pups... not that that really means anything.

I've found Jorg Sauer's name in various places online, but didn't know if it would be appropriate to contact him.

My German is terrible.  How do I go about contacting the SV to see what progress I can make there?  ...to contact Jorg Sauer, etc.

Thanks everybody for your help.
