Help! Last night while I was asleep I heard  my dog slurping and licking so loud  that I half dreamt that he was chewing on a huge steak bone. When I woke I discovered that he had been licking furiously on the back of his front leg on his carpal pad(the one above the paw). It appears he has a 1/4-1/2 inch small scrape tear. Not sre how he did this..it's not red or oozing or bleeding. It appears to annoy/hurt the heck out of him. He is walking otherwise fine(eating fine) but is quieter, mellower than usual. What ointment do you suggest I put on him? I have been told that hydrogen peroxide and aloe vera cause diahrrea and it has been recommended to me to apply calendula ointment(homeopathic). Any opinions? I would prefer to try something at home before rushing to the vet. Also what the heck do dogs use their carpal pad for? i.e climbing, balance, juggling or what? Thanks in advance......

I just came across an expression for the carpal pad aka stopper pads..and that dogs use these to slow down like brakes on roller skates..which makes sense considering my boy definiteley has a strong drive for balls and to run and brake like a maniac. Also has anyone out there used "mushers secret"?

You might be able to call your vet and get a recommendation for an OTC ointment to try.  However, if your dog is determined to lick the pad, which is natural, then you'll need to bind it or cover it so he can't ingest the meds.  I think I recall seeing some tall dog boots designed for that at the local Pets R Us.  Check your local stores, or surf on-line.

very common injury...... clean it really well..  Neosporin is great for pad injuries.... you can use a bitter spray or loosely wrap it.... if licking it makes him sick, he'll stop!!

Peroxide is used to make dogs vomit but way more than the residual you would find from cleaning a wound.... wouldn't worry there either

Have heard BagBalm also works well.. it should heal pretty quickly and you can jus snip off any ripped pieces that have hardened

giebel I use mushers secret all the time.  But I use it for hot cement/asphalt/cap rock that we have down here.  When we go to do ob and bitework I slather it on them.  Not alot of grass down here.

I agree with Dkiah. I use neosporin on dogs and other animals all the time and it really does the trick.  Pad cuts are painful to a dog, and a good antibiotic ointment will promote fast healing.

SOunds like your dog needs "re-treads."

Clean well with peroxide. (Buy at the equine supply store.)

Dress with  Furacin ointment.

Cover with 2-3 layers of Kling first aid bandage.

Cover again with 2 -3 layers of Vet Wrap. (also from equine store)

Both wrap materials "breathe".

Secure end with a piece of waterproof or electrical tape.

Change bandage and redress daily till healed.

Avoid throwing the ball on pavement or large-guage stone. ;)
