Two Moons

by Two Moons on 07 February 2009 - 18:02

I must have stayed up too late last night, things were beginning to get all fuzzy.   Not much better this morning as I was constantly awoken by the dogs.  I have one in heat and it keeps everyones nerves on edge.
Anyway back to the original topic.
I have recieved many good leads both here and thru PMs and there are some wonderful dogs out there.
Most are too far away.   For me a comfortable drive would be three to four hours, a day trip.   Ten to twelve hours would be an all nighter and would require an overnight stay somewhere.  Thats not completely out of the question.

At this point I feel compelled to explain my motives and intentions.     I want a pup solely for my own needs, one I can raise myself.   I'm not looking to make money, the last pups were sold only to cover my costs,  I'm more concerned about where they go and who's getting them.  I'm only looking to improve on what I have now.   A better coat and conformation with the desire to build on tracking and temperment.   Absolutely good health and extreme intelligence.
I think the last breeding acomplished this but I just have a personal issue with the white breast mark.  (picky picky).

I know my bitch has no titles and thats a major point with some of you, I fully understand.   I just don't have the where with all to get that done, its hard enough to train what I have for what I need here in the woods where I live.   I live in my own little world here and have no desire to change.

We went through this the last time as I remember, no dogs will be sold to questionable owners, none will end up in a shelter, and no one is going to get rich.   I'm only looking to breed up a knotch and keep a female for myself.
I appreciate all the PMs good and bad and value your opinions.

Now that thats out of the way, damn there are some great black dogs out there.   I envy some of you.
Keep them cards ands letters coming guys.

Moons.

Personally, I would stay away from a solid black *without* the white spot on his chest.  It's a trademark, almost symbolic, if you like of the awesomeness of the solid blacks :)

Going back about 40 + years, the most amazing blacks I have known have all had the white spot.  Sometimes it is no more than 4 hairs, but it needs to be there.

elenih, that is an interesting opinion! Could you point out some of the "most amazing blacks" you have known? I guess I will discard all of my blacks because they do not have any white spots. Oh wait, I can keep my girl Pia (she had a white hair in one of her ears, lol). I am just joking, because I had to laugh reading your post that I spilled my morning coffee all over my desk!
Seriously, while white spots might be tolerated on solid black dogs, it would really be disturbing the overall appearance, just like light or medium eyes would as well.
There is nothing more awsome than a solid black dog with coal black eyes and substantial bone.

I think you misunderstood me.  The black spot is on the chest only - nowhere else.

Eleni, what are you talking about? Yes, some working line blacks have a white spot, and they are still impressive looking dogs, but WTH do you mean "but it needs to be there?"

You will see that my post started out with "Personally"

It means "in my personal opinion", and so on and so forth....

Some puppies lose the spot by the time they are a few months old, and many many black and tan dogs have it as well, but you may not always notice it.  (this last sentence is not opinion, by the way)

Now guys,
No need to turn this into something its not.
Personally I don't believe a spot indicates anything.   Its just a minor thing to me.

No, I read that part. Your opinion is fine; but the "it needs to be there" just sounded ridiculous. You mean "for me, it needs to be there." You make is sound like there's something wrong with a true solid black. They don't all have it; many do, possibly even most. My female had 5 white hairs when she was little; they're gone now, or at least hidden in much thicker black fur. My male has never had a white spot on his entire body, except battle scars that occurred much later in life. The white spot is totally insignificant, inconsequential, and entirely meaningless.
