I always allow people to pet my dogs its good socialisation for them to have strangers rubbing and petting them, if there going to be at a show or even just out in public there gonna be surrounded by strangers and may even have a judge handling them!! All the local kids love my young girl and love petting her but i only allow it when i am incontrol!!! shes a bit of a nipper when she gets over excited!!!

In my Opinion it shows good character in the dog to allow strangers handle them!!!

Well put, Olskoolgsds!

Fine, but then don't go complaining about people that, heaven forbid, take an interest in your dog if you're out and about....
(Xeph)

Who is complaining here Xeph?   It's very simple, some people don't like strangers touching their dogs, some people don't mind, really no reason to get your panties in a bind.

I for one don't mind others petting my dog.  In fact she usually inititates the contact as she loves everyone at this puppy stage. However be on your toes.  A young couple were walking their pit bull puppy in a local park when a stranger asked if he could pet the puppy.  He then bent down, pet the puppy, unhooked the leash and walked off with the puppy!!  They attempted to stop him but he pulled a knife and threatened them.  This made the local news and was quite the buzz around Wichita Kansas.  We have a conceal carry law here.  Too  bad the couple weren't packing.

Plenty, it seems to me.  People take their dogs out, and then get annoyed when people want to touch their dogs.  If you don't want people to touch your dogs, fine (though that makes no sense to me...one reason I HAVE dogs is for socializing...but one is a service dog for that very purpose), but if you're going to be out with the pack, you should expect some interest.

like i said before every one should touch your dog and pet your and kiss your dog and sing a song to your your dog when it is a puppy.when the dog growes up no one should touch your dog.the reason being if you know any thing about german shepherds then you know they come in all shapes and coloures and different degree of temperment.and to assume they all going to behave the same way you are out of your simple mind.just because you have a nice easy going shep, but the next guy could have a shep that is extremely dominant and and belive it or not dogs are like people and they do have off days, and if this dog reads the situation wrong and sees some one's movement some satnding over it this person could get hurt really bad.i can go on and on but i think people who truly know a working shep and know about different temperments, get what i am saying.also shepherds represent certain type of dog we do not want every one to think these are nice wonderful dogs so every can go out and get one God knows there are enough dumb asses owning this breed.if you want every one to pet your dogs then there are breeds you can do that  with.you should own those dogs.there is nothing wrong with that. THIS BREED IS NOT FOR EVEY ONE TO OWN OR LIKE OR PET,SO LET'S NOT PRETEND OR MAKE LIKE IT IS. have a nice one.

Hell no!

Yes I allow anyone to touch my dog provided a) that they have asked me first and b) that they do not appear to be nuts.

I like my dogs to be social and to demonstrate that a GSD is not a nasty, vicious animal and perffectly friendly.

Makes my life and that of the dog and those with whom he has to come into contact so much more stress free.

I have only said no to a few people who have asked. Twice it was out of control kids with no parent present, the other time I was in the middle of working my dog and thought it rude the person didn't wait until I was done to bother me. My dog loves kids and wont usually wait for them to ask he will pull right up to them but I have to be carefull then that he doesn't scare some people, not everyone likes dogs, many are affraid. It's a 2 way street out there. I don't thrust my dog on people, they shouldn't fall all over my dog. It amazes me how many people want to hold his ball or throw it, that's just out of the question.

I do not let strangers pat my shepherd. She is hightly socialized in all kinds of situations and always acts appropiate.
She is aloof with stranges and will warm up to them after some time. She is part of my pack and has no need to be greating strangers. She takes her ques from me.  She does adore children tho, but adults she is aloof. She is a GSD not a lab.

I do allow anyone and everyone to pat my APBT's. They will see someone 100' away and start to wiggle.
