I think males make better protectors in general. They will lay their life on the line for you. I never see a police officer with a female ever!!!

In the "macho" breeds I prefer females, in the "femme" breeds I prefer males.

Are you for real? That's because female go through heat it has nothing to do with their ability to protect its handler...

I just love the boys. I'll take a handsome, loving, hunk any day. Those girls, well they are just such bitches!

All my life i have stayed with Male Dogs, until i had young Heidi, She was a Baby but had that something at her age none of the males i owned had at such a young age, so my next Pup will be a female, and if she has the same traits as Heidi had i will be very happy indeed

Tough question. Personally I've only owned males but while I was growing up my parents owned two females. One was probably the most intuitive dog I can remember and the other the hardest.

I prefer males, mainly because you have no heat cycles to deal with and I feel that they bond better to me.

" I never see a police officer with a female ever!!!"

Really?

Last I checked Barbie is a female and she is my cross trained patrol narcotics dog.  Her grandmother Fax von der Briken was one of the hardest dogs in protection I have seen, and talk about lightning fast.  She also took great delight in dumping more than her share of helpers.

It comes down more to personality of the individual dog.

Females.
They always seem more protective of the kids but the males seem more protective of the fence line.

by angusmom on 02 April 2009 - 05:04

in my house its just the opposite - our girl is far more protective of property and our male is the baby-sitter. claire likes kids, esp if they will play ball, but angus, as big a doofus as he is, actually seems to "count heads" and always watches over the youngest of the kids. maybe its just personalities that really matter...
