My V-rated dark sable/red-brown working line dogs do not look like coyotes, thank heavens, and Silbersee's sable show dogs do bite.

You CAN have it all: working dogs that V in the BSZS and show dogs that work with the best of 'em. You just have to look for them.

Yes, they can be crossed on one another. Its done more and more across the pond, by many of the best breeders, always has been... often with excellent results.  I am delighted with the results of my lastworking x show litter.

Soemtime late this year or early next I will be breeding my Portia (Pallo dgtr, Marc H.g-dgtr) to Carol. We will be expecting great looking pups, sables and solid blacks. Carol produces black and so did Pallo, so there's a good chnace Portia will too.

...and YES, I WILL show them! :-D

How about the V-49 dog Benny vom Haus Pe-Ja..?

He is from working lines and is absolutely... a beautiful dog!!!

I would have no reservations about breeding one of my "show line" females to him!!

I personally LOVE the "show line" sables....they actually are my FAVORITE!

We had a beautiful red sable female who did VERY well in the conformation ring as a young dog until a tragic accident took her away from us.......her mother was also from Wanko lines.

I hope we see a VA sable stud dog soon!!!!....I think it's extremely important that the show lines do not "lose" the color.

What kind of color possibilities do you get -

Showline sable x showline black and red?

Showline sable x workingline black sable

Showline sable x black and tan (saddle)?

showline sable x bicolor?

Yes look at the male Willowdale Indiana on this database.  He is even darker than the photo on this database.  He is Ursus/Champ Dakota/Pitt Tronje breeding.

Jean Duff, I looked at Willowdale Indiana. He looks very nice, but I have a couple of questions? Why does it say V Willowdale Indiana? Is that supposed to be a V-rating? If so, what are his titles at 18 months old? A V-rating is awarded to dogs 2 years and older with titles.  And why is he rated OFA Excellent, when he is not 2 years old? Or is his date of birth incorrect? Inquiring minds would like to know? Where is he located?

FCSC, all comibnations will produce sables. The extent of pigment is determined by the ancestors in the pedigree, not really by phenotype. A friend of mine in Germany bred is red sable showline female (beautiful pigment) to Elute Mohnwiese and got light sable offspring.

I now own V Aischa vom Haus Pe-Ja, SchH3, KKL1 Lebenzeit, as well as three of her pups sired by Melano vom Cap Arkona. I also own a very nice sable female out of the Czech Republic. The bottom line is that several people are breeding high quality sables who are correct conformationally, healthy and can work. I also own some very nice show line dogs. And I show them all.

This is what I think when I hear sable:

I don't think of this when I hear sable:

Oh my God, hodie! You bought the dog I liked and would have bought myself...if I were ever to breed....(which will be never).  I'm sure you read my post more than once and smiled.

Well...good luck with Aischa.  She's a beauty. (LOL)

You can find working line dogs with V conformation ratings in all coat colors.

Show line dogs seem to be exclusively black & red or black & tan.  You don't see much diversity at all in the top placers.  Looking at the list of historical Siegers, it seems the last time a dog that was NOT b/r or b/t to win Sieger was a bi-color back in the 60's.  Almost ancient history in dog years.

You won't see many sable show dogs until a) people start crossing with working lines to get coat colors back, and b) judges in the ring don't snub the new crosses.

From the posts above it appears that there are not many pure show line sables out there, so I get the impression that it would be difficult to revive the diverse coat colors without ending up with a lot of over-breeding and in-breeding.

What about black and bi-colors?  Any show line dogs with those coat colors?  Obviously not any highly ranked at the Sieger shows, but are they even out there?

No, they are not, Yvette. Unfortunately! I would love to see a black dog in the ring. What ever happened to Wanko vom Kösters-Eck? He was shown in Pittsburgh in 2005 and received a V-rating with a very good critique from Heinz Scheerer. Wanko was even in front of some showline dogs. Heinz was impressed by him. He told me so later.  Seeing Wanko in 2005 awakened my interest in black dogs, but I have since found out that they are often treated as a "byproduct" by workingline breeders.  My husband and I have spent many months looking for a black dog and finally found a nice female, V-rated, KKL1 with a flawless breed survey report! She will most likely be bred to V-Paska vom Salztalblick before coming over soon, if our plans work out.
