I second that from EchoMeadows, go to the Vet and get her checked out.Is it a new female to you? If not you should know when she went in heat before!Yes the best way to find out if she is ready is the males nose the naturell way but also very risky.

As said before, go and get her checked out by a vet. Females always swell and have a discharge when in season. Maybe she is keeping herself very clean (do you see her licking her vulva alot?)but she still should be swelling. You can do the "white" tissue test. Just as you can imagine wipe her vulva and check for some blood, you may have to press in some. Shows up great on the tissue. I say the male knows best. I had one female that would stand for males (and flag) from day 1 to day 25. Maybe your girl is just starting her cycle, you haven't yet found the blood and she is just a hussy like my one girl was, so the males are giving it their best shot but don't have the right scent yet....

Not necessarily. It could just as easily be a silent heat. No outward signs of swelling, discharge, nothing. I had a female that went thru this, male still bred her, and 8 puppies later... Only way you will know for sure is by running progesterone. I did which is how I knew hers was silent.

Silent heat cycle is when a dog goes through a normal heat cycle without showing any external signs.Your dog may grow out of this or she may continue to have silent heats all of her life. How can you ensure not to miss the big event? If your male shows interest in her take her to the vet&get a sample of blood& cells from vaginal secretions, the vet can tell whether your dog is going through a normal hormonal heat cycle. If your dog's first cycle was silent estimate the beginning of her next heat cycle, then prepare for the possibility that she won't show external signs again. Just an other suggestion from a fellow breeder.Bigbrotherswatchingyou. LOL :)

My first thought is the possibility that the bitch has a VAGINAL STRICTURE--particularly if the male is mounting her, unable to completely penetrate, and unable to obtain a tie. My canine repro specialist vet estimates that ~20% of all bitches have strictures.

My question is: Is the vulva swollen? Some females are cleaner than others, and some don't discharge as much as others, but I would guess if she is in heat, the vulva would be swollen quite a bit that what it NORMALLY is. Stephen

What you describe, is a silent(white) heat. There is follicular activity without external signs of proestrus and estrus, like swelling and discharge. Of course, it is an annormal cyclus, but females can get pregnant and have a full litter, if they are mated at the right time. The occurance is very seldom, it is not known, if there is a genetic component responsible. If you want to mate her probably next time, a regular gynecological investigation should take place every month, including vaginal smear slides and progesternon testing. Progesteron testing can also rule out, if an ovulation has taken place this time. I would recommend giving Vit. E, 200 mg per day in monthly intervals.

Many bitches are so fastidious that they leave no visible signs of discharge. It is possible that the time is past. Next time around when you think her cycle should begin soon put a white sheet on her bedding. You will at least have an accurate starting point. You can also put sani-pants on her and see if the more drivey male shows genuine interest. Bear in mind that males often employ wishful thinking when the scent is ALMOST right. Conversely your male may have only moderate libido. As has been stated a normal bitch can vary considerably in presentation and in cycle.
