A certain small but significant proportioon of GSDs with skin problem which are viewed as allergic are actually due to sub-clinical (a bit low) pancreatic enzymes, known as mild exocrine pancreatic deficiency, reliably diagnosed in a fasting GSD as indicated by a low or low-normal TLI blood test. The mild EPI is iften accompanied by excessive hunger and/or prey drive, nervousness, mild gut bacterial infections and mild malabsorption of nutrients, characterized by unthriftiness, soft and ligh colored stool and occasional itcghing and chewing of feet and pads. This is often not considered by vets and many GSD owners don't understand this. Treatment is usually sucessful and consists of a short course of broad spectrum antibiodics and pancreatic enzyme supplementation.
