I looked online and I found one from 1922. It looks like the brindle German Shepherd comes from the dutch shepherd....
Here is the one from 1922....

I personally would love to see it make a come back, however..... At what cost?

Stunning dogs :) Am so glad the brindle isnt 100% gone and hopefully in the future there will be more Brindle  GSD's popping up around the world "No good dog is a bad color"

I am going to step out on the   biggest limb I can find and say .... The picture posted by the OP is not a brindle  German Shepherd..

My Raydo has the same face markings and he is as red as that male posted .  The markings often show up on the head in many different widths but always in the patterns shown above in the  male named Copper...Raydo, and my other males have the same markings , and some wider and more deep and lines a liitle shorter or longer...

The blanket back is no different nor the legs are not brindle either...this is just a deep red and black gsd.

Brindle is a pattern that covers the dog..from nose to tail..This dog is not marked that way.

I am sure some of our Genetic and german breeders on here can verify with facts and pictures and correct me if I am wrong.

Raydo is not anywhere near being anything like a  Brindle but main thing I am saying is he has different lines than the rest of my males..My main boys have masks and big pieces of black markings,, Raydo has the lines ...some thinner ones and then that one big thick one..Will try another pic off camera tonight.
If Raydo would look down he has other lines  on his head that are diluted...This pic was two years ago .Tonight I see different lines as the fall is here and the underhairs are fading . Depends on what time of year pics are taken..
The posters dog has diluted lines also so it give the appearance .

I am along side YR on this one.

Now that dog Friedo, posted by DOX, no doubt  THAT'S a brindle.  Even though the dog does display a saddle, you can still see the brindling clearly through out the whole dog.  Dox thank you for posting that picture, very cool!

I love the color, but to me a GSD is not about the color, so I don't see the point of going to the trouble of bringing it back just  for color's sake.  But that's just me.

Here is a link to Friedo's pedigree:

WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT IF THE PICTURE COULD BE ADDED TO THE PEDIGREE FOR HISTORICAL REASONS AT LEAST?

Sue:

The picture above is also a brindle labeled   1922.

Here is another of raydo's pics with head down...the lines are four  but faded now with head down.

tonight his lines are dim.  But the point is    most of my heads have big blotches not lines  and brindle has to be all over the body.

I know, but I was excited because the brindle dog Freido (1923)  is one I have heard of but never seen the picture of.  Whoever added  the picture to  the pedigree..........  Thank you!!!  With this dog we have a true brindle with a name and an SV number.

Now the brindle pictured from 1922 I had seen before, but unfortunately I have never seen him described as anything other than brindle (no name or reg number).  He  reminds me very much of a dutchie, but of course back then, all 3 breeds (Mali, Dutchie, GSD) were verrrrrrrry similar, much more so than today.
