Sam, great choices, Ulk was some dog wasnt he?
My personal choice for the complete package (dont bash me working lines folk pls!)  would have to be Zamp.  He was done a great disservice at Crufts by a judge with no spine, but thats another story!  He has the conformation, great clean lines, nothing over or underdone, and a glorious head and expression. Just my humble opinion, and no doubt I will have some folk scoffing, but a little healthy debate is good!

Ulk was a force on the field. I never heard that his courage was ever doubted. Some people thought he was too heavy in the chest and criticized Messler for that. But Ulk was a very correct dog.

Bodo Lierberg was the total dog though and if you go look at his photo in the Bundesieger list you'll find that he was not at all an extreme dog in any way, shape or form. He conformed to the FCI standard and he could work. But of course this was before the "split" took place.

Zamp is a beautiful boy I agree, Zacsmum.

I would have a show dog with a very strong work ethic.

That's easy for me.  My dog Zahn von Noch Wasser and as second (for now) Uno Vom Klausener Grund.  I pick the first one bc he spend every moment of his life finding ways to love and please his family.  He protected us, he served us, he loved us right down to the girls.  Pictured at right.  He was a German Shepherd that lived what German Shepherds stand for.
Uno bc his attitude is much like Zahn's when we got Zahn.  HIs affection and brain is there and he will be the same after trained a little.  I am sure you are sick of seeing pictures of him....chuckle.

It's a shame more people can't choose their own dogs.  Ahh in a perfect world.

I was thinking the same thing, because that's what I'd do.  Hutch v. Tiekerhook, before any other.  But there were some nice alternatives already mentioned that I like, with Yoschi and Nick H. probably my third choice.  My second choice is that "perfect girl" for my perfect boy.

wlpool, if you read my original post, I said, "This is not a topic where I am asking you to post your own dog (because we all love the dogs that we own!), but rather a special or unique (or not-so-unique) dog in your dog's pedigree, or in another dog's pedigree."

That would probably be why people are not posting their own dogs, because I specifically asked people not to. We all love our own dogs and wouldn't choose another, but I am interested in which dog (or dogs) in your dog or any other dog's pedigree that is most interesting to you, and why. If you had to choose one of them, why would you choose them? What traits or characteristics do they add to their progeny? This is what I was asking.

Thank you all for your input. This is really helping with some research I am doing on bloodlines. One thing I find really interesting is that if you go back in these lines, there was a time when the show dogs were bred to working dogs, without discrimination of one "type" of dog over another. There are VA dogs in many of the working dogs' pedigrees listed. On the same mindset, there are working dogs listed in many of the show dogs' pedigrees. Highly interesting.
