I feed the bison with some raw chicken and dogs look very good. Lean, strong, vital, beautiful coat.

All great suggestions Hodie,  I often wonder if the food issues are not just giardia or coccidosis undiagnosed and not a food problem.

I've also had issues with the "high" quality foods.  like they are too rich.
personally, for the money spent on the higher quality foods, I can feed raw alot cheaper.  my dogs have been getting 1/2 raw and 1/2 purina foods for the past year and are doing wonderful. I don't believe in all the supplements that are promoted for raw diets either.  meat, fat, and bone should be sufficeint.  dogs wouldn't be getting kelp extract in the wild now would they?

I have had all 3 of mine on TOTW Wild Fowl for over a year. While I sometimes wonder about whether they have changed the formula (different smell, different look of kibble) my dogs have done great. No gas, firm stool, great coats. The bison formula has lamb in it, and that caused gas/loose stool, so switched to the duck. I have also found I feed less of TOTW than I did on other foods.  They also did well on Chicken Soup, but I wanted to go grain free. Wellness was WAY TO GASSY. With food, it really is hit or miss. What is great for one, may be horrible for another dog.

I've switched my female from EVO to TOTW (Pacifc Stream Salmon formula) at the end of 2008.  Knock on wood...so far so good.  No gas or rather nothing out of the ordinary.  Her coat has improved considerably from EVO.  I was looking for a different protein source for her as she had always been on a chicken based protein source.    The output is slightly larger than it was with the EVO but is a firmer consistency with the TOTW.  Overall, I've been happy with it but it still may be too early to tell.

I have three dogs on TOW for well over a year now.
I rotate through all three flavors.
I've had no problems whatsoever with it.
No gas, coats are good.
Several cats eat it the TOW for cats.

Gas, diarrhea, and poor condition are common problems with the tutti-fruiti dog foods--the ones with vegetables and/or fruits added because, gosh, they're good for people so they must be good for dogs. Some dogs can eat almost anything and do well. But many dogs just cannot digest fruits and vegetables well. (It's interesting that wolves have been seen shaking out the stomach contents of their prey to avoid eating vegetables.) These dogs often do very well on a decent-quality food like Iams, Eukanuba, or Royal Canin. The only opinion that matters here is your dog's opinion. If your dog is doing great on a dog food with corn, never mind the "corn-is-evil" crowd. (I still haven't figured out why corn is supposed to be evil but potatoes are a gift from God.) Your dog's good condition is the only argument you need in favor of the food you're using.

Back when I was a kid, I tried to be a vegetarian, my friends were doing it and raved about how well they felt, how much energy….I tried and it was terrible. By the second year, my hair was dull and brittle, skin was flakey, lost a quarter of my body weight, no energy, would stand up too quickly and pass out…It was very careful to do everything by the book, combining proteins and all the rest…..I finally gave it up and have been great ever since.

I have a friend who cannot eat meat, it makes her sick. Another friend that cannot eat dried beans, others who are lactose intollerent.

The point I’m getting at is that like humans, what a dog can digest varies per animal.

Shop around and find what is best for your dog. Some eat raw with out problems; some do very well with barley, rice, corn…experiment and come up with a solution that works  Then don’t let anyone who doesn’t know you or your dog talk you into something that might not be right for your situation.

hello all,
a while back our food store owner told us she would no longer carry TOTW being that they had done away with their outside qaulity control checks, they didn't see it as neccisary any longer ! so we have since switched to fromm and my dogs are doing good on it.
