Suggestions on Working lines - Page 2

Both lines are great but I noticed the same thing that Jyl did but I don't call it more serious in their work but they seem to be more "screw balls" lol.

I'm looking at anything. I have a Schutzhund German Shepherd but he is West German Show line.
I'm looking at Black Sable or Black. I'm located in GA but I'm willing to go around the US to get the right pup. I'm looking for health, looks, drive, and a solid breeder that is willing to give me references. KKL1, SchH3, and OFA Good/ Normal Fast History would be ideal for both parents. I'm looking for a harder retrieving drive and a dog that will still be my pet but is good good on the field. I don't want JUST a kennel dog.

 

Please let me know.

My suggestion is that you take care not to bite off more than you can chew. Don't let some breeder send you home with a pup that's bred to be too hard, hard, hard dog that you won't be able to handle later. That's the biggest mistake I see on this board from relatively green (less than 3 dogs HOT to titles) handlers. they all THINK they want the hardest damned dog that ever looked through a collar after their first one which was way too soft. Then they GET that hard, hard, hard dog and can't do a damned thing with it. Next thing you know the handler is working with some idiot trainer who claims they can get any dog "under control" and they lead the poor thing out on the field with everything from a rope slip collar to a sharp pinch collar to an e-collar on it (Yes, at the same time on occasion) and torture the poor  thing unfairly till its so screwed up it doesn't know which way is up and which down.

I have seen this happen so many times it makes me peuk. The last one was a Crok Ehrlenbusch son I believe, 3x times the dog that the handler was a handler, faced with a psychotic egotist cop who thought he was a helper.  He ended up putting three people in the hospital before they put him to sleep. He was a good dog in the wrong hands. Makes me sick to think of him even these 5-6 years later. I cried all the way home that day, never to return to that field. Looking back I kick myself for not having filed charges, cops or no cops.

Thats why I want a dog that I can live with, not one that has to stay in a kennel. Something liveable with more of a drive than my current Schutzhund Pup. I'm keeping Atlas, I just want a more driven pup next year. lol.

If you want to look at Czech lines you might study Galant zPS.  Jyl linked to him up earlier in this post.

I have a daughter of his who has very strong work drives, is a great deal of fun out on the field and has strong drives but she also has a beautiful "on/off" switch and is clear headed.   Nothing phases her, not the vet, children, car rides and she is very sound in body as well.  Her hips are normal, her elbows normal and I've never had trouble with her diet.

From what I've heard from other people with Galant off spring they say the same things, very clear headed, very cool in any situation but with a lot of will and desire to work.

I would say though that I wouldn't get one unless I was dedicated to working them.  They do need to work, whether it be Sch, SAR, agility, just something.

I'm a strong believer that my GSD's should work. What is a GSD without a job? :)

I'm sorry, but I have to mention something here.  The color of the pup has no place in this discussion if you first want to find that great pup.    It's just as bad as show line people insisting on black & red.  Look at the dogs, the work, the health.  Be realistic about what you will be able to handle (like Shelley said).  When you find the litter that meets your requirements, get the puppy out of that litter that will best suit your needs.  If  you like black or black sables and your pup is that, OH BOY, Iceing on the Cake, but it should not be a requirement.  If it's a black & tan, so what? -  it has no bearing on the work.

That was the point of my original post... Someone asked about color so I answered the honestly.

I want Health, KKL1, SchH3 and a history of good OFA.... I also want a higher drive than Atlas. He has a good drive but its not the ideal drive I would like to have. However I would like for this dog to be liveable.

Then you are on the right track.  Good luck in your search, I have no doubt you will find the right pup!

Sueincc i wanted to have this discussion so bad but my thread got hijacked. I want a dog that can work. Like you said the colour is icing on the cake but i just wanted to know what those dogs are called. I can handle a hard, aggressive, high prey drive dog. My showline female is super hyper, extremely aggressive, her prey and defense drive is off the charts and shes wrecked my house. And to be completely honest, i dont mind that at all. With a firm hand and constant love and attention, she mellowed down. I never gave up on her.  So basically a dog with good health, a dog that can go SchH3 multiple times and and a dog with good hips, a dog that can go KKL1 or 2 is a dream dog.

BTW tiffae89, you dont mind sharing this thread with me right? Its just that all the expert WL people are participating and i wanted to have this discussion real bad. I didnt get a chance to in my previous threads. Hope you understand.
