I really like the furminator.  Best rake I've tried for getting out the hair before it ends up on the couch.

I've personally never noticed breakage of top hairs on my dogs but I'm not anal about the coat either so it's possible I just haven't noticed.  Perhaps it makes a diference if your dog is long-coat or plush-coat.  My GSD is normal stockhaar, and then we have a Mali with the usual short coat of that breed.

Another shedding blade that I've used that worked 2nd best was the Oster shedding blade available on-line through many livestock stores.  Works well, just not as good.

I also use the furminator on my two long-haired cats and it really works on them too.  Hee hee.  Here kitty kitty...  >:)

Bought my furminator on ebay for $32 vs the $50 full price.  I have not tried any of the cheap knock-offs though they are now readily available.

My friend across the street just bought one, used it on her wolfhounds and then came across the street to use it on my Mojo. Amazing how much fur went flying and what a break for the vacuum.  Over a week later and he still looks great. Only problem, our local pet shop is wanting over $75 dollars for one of those things. So for now, I'm happy to let her come over and let the fur fly, and it sure does on a windy day!  Some say, watch where the fur flies in the garden, or you're likely to get  hair growing within the potatoes!

To make the purchase even more confusing, the FURminator comes in different sizes.  Which size did t hose of you who bought one get for a GSD?  Thanks a bunch :)

Like any other tool, the FURminator is great if it is used correctly. It does not damage the coats of my show dogs.

I usually loosen (even back-coming) the hair with a rake that has very long, rotating teeth--doesn't rip the hair out. Any large clumps, I pull out by hand--sometimes, use a shedding blade.

I always finish off with the FURminator. The key to using it is not to dig into the coat as if you were using a "mini-cultivator". Just drag (using very little pressure) the tool along the coat--in the direction that the coat grows.

The FURminator is particularly effective in removing the loose hair from the forelegs during a massive shed.

For a GSD, I use the medium-sized FURminator.

Thanks for the reviews! I've been undecided on this. My dog's breeder says "don't waste your money", but a friend of mine who used to be a professional groomer thinks it's great!  I was worried about breaking the guard hairs, until I saw Louise's post.
