For some reason, I'm not really partial to the sables.  A friend of mine has a female sable.  She is skinny and doesn't look like she's ever going to fill out.  Looks more like a cyote than a sable gsd.  I do know of a male sable from West Germany that has lived here in the states for quite a while now.  He is 5 now.  Studded his first time not too long ago and the pups I believe are around 4 weeks old now.  Not sure if he was stud for a sable or not.  Never asked the lady seeing as how she is VERY rude, and has nothing good at all to say about my long/plush coated gsd.  People like her turn me right off : - {

illian---I don't own a sable, but do love them. Having browsed through your website yesterday, I must say you take very nice pictures of your very nice dogs.  A while back 'Do Right'  was asking for opinions on breeding and his focus was on sable showlines. I was going to suggest that he take a look at v. Haus Pe-Ja.  At the time, they had a female for sale---V Aischa v. Haus Pe-Ja.  I thought she was a beautiful working line sable. I also thought an interesting way to proceed with his breeding program would be to explore combining show and work lines---bring in new blood---with looks of this calibre.  Aischa's dam was likewise the dam of Benny v. Haus Pe-Ja. (Because I had no idea what the temperament was of these lines, I decided not to speculate and confuse 'Do Right', but I have to admit, personally, I was intrigued myself with exploring the possibilities (even if only as a buyer, not breeder).

Argen, please look again at Timo: His great-grandmother Assi von der Falkenzinne came out of workinglines. Also, I have know Wanko vom Lippischen Norden since puppyhood (Timo's sire). I saw him for the first time as a 7 week old on the breeders' property. Waldemar Schirr was a working judge and longtime breeder who always mixed both lines. Of course due to that fact he never bred anything of note until Wanko came along. Wanko was actually the one who opened people's eyes to sables again. He just happened to produce a good offspring in Timo. I co-owned a Wanko-daughter years ago by the name of Ivy vom Haus Dexel. She was bred to a V-rated black working dog and produced just one puppy, a solid black female with great conformation. So Wanko even carried over the black factor. I don't know if that was passed on to Timo though.

Shepherd Woman, I don't know how many sables you have seen but none of ours look like coyotes, lol.

Melanie, I never said that there are no sable V-rated males in Germany. On the contrary, I am sure there are quite a few. I was talking about prominent stud dogs, which breeders frequently use. Not sure where Baldur is, but he certainly is not used much or at all. I will look through the stud dog news of the SV (SID - Schau- und Decknachrichten) and see if I find him in there at all. Unfortunately, I don't have time to do that on the weekend.

Chris,

"There are currently no sable stud dogs in Germany with the exception of Margman Torsten, maybe (if he is still in Germany)."

I took that literally as "NO sable stud dogs in Germany" since that was what you had said.  ;) Sorry for the confusion! Baldur was used some last year, and also previous to that. He is not what you would call a "high volume VA dog", but he is a beautiful sable stud male and is in fact in Germany.  :) It is unfortunate that his ZW is so high, but hopefully some of the puppies he has produced will be old enough to "a" stamp soon, and bring that ZW down.

Interesting thread!

Slightly off topic here but responding to a post.

Shepherd Women, Be very careful when you talk bad about sables, you may just be insulting somebodies working line dog.  To me, my working line dogs are more beautiful then most show line dogs.  But you will notice I don't talk bad about show line dogs. To each their own.

Melanie, sorry for not being more specific. I hang around too much on the German boards, I guess. Let me specify: In Germany, a stud dog is being defined as a male who is used regularly and/or has progeny to show for already. That is more than a titled, breed surveyed and V-rated male who meets the breeding criteria. But nonetheless, the dog looks nice. Where is he now?

Animules, I agree with you. But we like both, showline and workingline sables, if the structure is correct. And completely off topic: I would love to see more black dogs.

Chris
