Max von Stephanitz would turn in his grave would he see what has become of his beloved breed.

The point I am trying to make is that I personally turned my back on my favourite breed, the German Shepherd, when I saw what had become of this once so wonderful dog. They have nothing in common anymore with the original German Shepherd and had mutated into disease ridden spectacles of their former selves. Sure - if I'm willing to put the hours in to train and "entertain" a working-line bred dog I'm okay,  but that's not really an option for an old lady.

BTW - ALL dog breeds were developed by crossing different breeds. Even the GSD's started as mutts. ;)

I don't want to argue with you guys - I'm just saddened at the direction the GSD has taken.............

As Wikipedia states so rightly:

Modern breed

The modern German Shepherd is criticised for straying away from von Stephanitz's original ideology for the breed:] that German Shepherds should be bred primarily as working dogs, and that breeding should be strictly controlled to eliminate defects quickly. Critics believe that careless breeding has promoted disease and other defects. Under the breeding programs overseen by von Stephanitz, defects were quickly bred out; however, in modern times without regulation on breeding, genetic problems such as colour-paling, hip dysplasia, monorchidism, weakness of temperament, and missing teeth are common.

Happy to report that my dog has excellent hips, great eyes, elbows and teeth and a wonderful temperament. :))

AHAHAHHAHA, Oh that's a good one, Oh yeah, if Wikipedia says it, it must be true.  What a joke.   What is wrong with you?  Do you enjoy being ridiculed?  Again, this is a German Shepherd Dog board, not a Shiloh board.  Why do you stay where you are not wanted?  Go talk to the pet boards, the newbies there might buy what you are selling, but you are an idiot if you think GSD people are doing anything other than laughing at you.

I work a regular job, my dogs sit at home waiting for me most of the day.  I do get an extended lunch to play with them, but I left at 7:20 this am and it's after 6 now and won't be home for a while.  They're workingline dogs, they have lots and lots of drive.  I took careful time to direct it when younger, and I don't have to train and entertain all day.  I can't, I have a job they can't come to.  yet we all do just fine.  I do have to entertain when I get home, but then that is why I got a GSD, I love the interaction and the minds they have.  But then if I wanted a lazy dog, i could probably find a working line again that I considered lazy without much effort on my part.  health, teeth and all.  The GSD isn't dead, you just have to spend a little time to find one

by the way, still waiting for the proof of titled shilohs,  Where are they?  Nope, there  are none, as I thought, you are full of nothing but hot air.  Oh and funny thing, I asked around, no one remembers Tina from the old NASA days either, wonder why?  I do remember there was a crazy lady in So Cali breeding GSD/Mal mixes back in the early 80s.  She used to bring these hairy monstrosities to club and some seminars  to try to sell them, only thing was they couldn't track, do protection or even obedience half way decently.    She actually tried to tell us she was training her dogs to track by pulling her pants down and sticking her ass on the track!!!!  I swear!  A real twisted, sick bitch, that one.

AlexeSchH III sorry but shiloh can't hold a candle to some of the amazing gsd being produced today there are many and here are 2, imo, very good examples:

there are problem in the breed but there are also many great breeders producing solid working dogs

AlexeSchH III if you only look for the bad that is all you will see; but when you look for those who are really breeding because they love the breed and want to improve it, and not just line their pockets, you will find some truly solid 'total' gsds that are completely consistent with the founder's hopes and dreams; and these dogs anyone would love to share their life with, so to say: "Max von Stephanitz would turn in his grave would he see what has become of his beloved breed." is simply not true.  there are some major problems in the breed but there are also some amazing breeders producing stellar gsds.

i have no doubt shilohs can be very nice dogs as well, and every breed has to start somewhere, but they are not an improvement on the gsd rather a developing splnter breed and should stop being compared to gsds because they are bred for very different reasons. you do not have to put gsd's down to raise shilohs up. a shiloh is a shiloh and they have a ways to go to set themselves as a breed with a clear direction and a clear purpose, as any breed does in it's early stages of development.  it is my guess that with more time and more generations under it's belt the breed will come into it's own but it will not have anything to do with the successes or failures of the gsd - these are simply separate issues.

so if you wish to state why you chose a shiloh over a gsd that's great - you have gotten older and wish to have the basic 'look & feel' of a gsd but want a dog that is easier to live with and shilohs offer such an alternative that's great; but this has nothing to do with gsds and everything to do with you choosing the right breed for you. but this is a gsd list you can't possible expect a lot of support for shilohs ... or poodles or black lab or nearly every other breed.

Egads!! Are they still here???? Is there some type of "mission" requirement or something among the shiloh folks? Do they have a convert quota, or something? I am sorry, but I feel like testing to see if just mentioning other breeds on this forum attracts their aficionados (sp) to this forum in the same manner as the shiloh folks. Let's see what happens. :-)
