Sunsilver why do you continue to argue about an aspect of work that you know NOTHING about? It is very evident from your foolish statements you have never been involved with any type of personal protection dog training, you do not know what you are talking about.

I don't even know who Tina Barber is - never met the woman. All I know - Shiloh Shepherds aside - is, that the GSD is a far cry from the working dogs I grew up with and that makes me sad. I would consider an "Altdeutschen Schaeferhund". At least they seam to be able to gait straigt without scraping their hocks in the mud..........
As far as the Shiloh goes : At least there's a wonderful family dog and companion. Just right for an old lady like me. Other than that: I hope that some people start waking up around the conformation ring and start breeding dogs that are as square as most of the working lines are. The problem with working lines is that, that many people just don't have the time to put the kind of work in, these lines require. Don't get me wrong: I love GSD's, but for me the Shiloh Shepherd is a wonderful alternative. My SchH-days are over and for me it's now the dog of my dreams. Please accept that. I'm physically not able to "entertain" a working-line German Shepherd and I wouldn't touch a conformation shepherd with a ten foot pole ..........
BTW: Anyone here with a sheepherder ?

Seems simple, if you can't handle a GSD then don't get one because you don't really want one. You want the idea of having one, but you don't want one. Same as kids, why have them if you don't want to deal with them, or get a big ass gun when you can't control or handle a bb gun, or drive 70 when you can't react when driving 25????
I myself find it highly unlikely that I well bred GSD won't produce a dog that somebody wants. Litters vary, not all are labor intensive as some, some can be mellow and perfect pets. This whole notion that a shilo somehow is filling a void???? Please, piss on somebody else's head and tell them it's rainin'.
Shilo's are an attempt to be different, unique and sell some dogs, because what they are on paper and what they are in real life are two different things.

My upbringing won't allow me to piss on other peoples' heads. Sorry. Can't help you there.
However - I can clearly see that you did not understand my posting at all. I love shepherds, don't get me wrong, I just wish they would breed some one can look at without feeling sorry for the way breeders have crippled them.........

If someone breeds a 130 lb long hair dog and calls it a german shepherd and tells people this is what gsd's are supposed to be or once were, that's a problem.
But if someone starts with the genetic form of a gsd and launches a new breed, for different purposes, what could be wrong with that? It should be flattering, I would think.
I suspect that if Shilohs were 50 pounds and unpopular, this thread would not have been so acerbic. I suspect that the popularity of huge, coated, easy-going shepherd like dogs is at least in part the root of the problem. GSD folks are, frankly, annoyed at the success of this new breed. Perhaps especially at the high prices these dogs, pet quality by the gsd standard, command in the market?
The average pet family often prefers bigger and they don't mind or even like coat. If we are not willing to oblige (and I am not saying we should) then why do we resent people so much who do?
Unless you tell me these dogs are dying very young, living badly, biting people left and right, and harming the rep of ethical gsd breeders, it seems we should live and let live. Otherwise, it seems like a religious conflict, in which the form of baptism or of the sacrements is for no good reason a life and death matter.
