Dodie,
I will try to explain to you a few reasons why I personally feel this is happening. I also see these articles and just sigh and feel ashamed of the owners of these pit bulls.
One of the reasons you hear about the pit bulls attacking/killing is that, well, they are. As it has been stated on here, they are crap bred dogs with no outlet for their aggression, no training and no discipline. They used to be strictly fighting dogs, and many people like myself used them for hunting the wild pigs in my area that were a danger.
Like I said in one of my previous posts, they became too available to too many people. Either gangbangers, or the extreme opposite "pet" bull owners. These "pet" bull owners are the more dangerous of the two. They treat these dogs like people, call them their babies and let them get away with little things like say, sneaking food from their human child. Owners think that is cute. Or think their child is "sharing." These are people with no business whatsoever owning dogs. Period.
No dog should be treated like a human. That is where you find nippy or biting dogs. You'd not believe how many owners of small dogs (all breeds) come in to my salon and tell me that their dogs bite their kids when they bother the dogs. It shocks me! It would never be tolerated in my home. In fact people come to my house and cannot believe how amazing my chihuahuas are with people. But back to the bulldogs....
Most pit bulls, even if the gameness and the desire to fight have been slowly being bred out of the dogs, they still have prey drive and can still be very dominant. This is where I see the problem with these dogs attacking people, especailly small children. These dogs have not been properly culled in generations and now we have these dogs who are dominating their family with out the family even being aware it's happening. They are being allowed to run loose and escape and they are killing/mauling.
Granted they are not the gamedogs they once used to be but poorly bred specimens who are nothing but a shell of what the APBT used to be and represent. Pit bulls used to be known for their heart and because of this big heart, folks thought that was just the perfect thing to bring into a family. Obviously these for-the-family "breeders" nowadays have screwed this breed up, probably beyond repair. They used to be trained working dogs first, family dogs later. Well that's just my view on the problem. I hope this helps.

VomRuiz,
Yes, it does thank you very much. That is really what I was trying to get out of posting this is education not redicule. So, I thank you for that. This was not just the only episode I have heard, so I wanted to know what everybody thought on here. If you read the atricle I posted right from the web site. It listed all of the attacks from these dogs within the past year. Which has been a lot. So, thanks again.

This thread HAS been very educational, IF one opens one's mind. Personally, pits are *not* my favorite breed, but so what? There are lots that are not my preferred breed, e.g., any molossal. However, I have known some pitbulls with wonderful temperaments, in some cases better than the gsds trotting around a ring .
Thank you Jenni, Stacy, and Abhay.

Abhay, you tricked me, LOL! I didn't even see this til just now. Here I am racking my brain, trying to think of anyone remotely resembling that gentleman (in that thumbnail, no less!) who had anything to do w/either Lloyd's Ch.Gator or Crenshaw's/Rodriguez' Gator, and then the Chicago thing really confused me. Darn you. I wanted to figure it out on my own. I have that tenacity, you know. ;-)
In general, to address Dodie, since apparently now the attitude has changed from "just another Pit Bull issue" to "please, I'm trying to learn" - I'll say this: This is a big part of the problem- PERCEPTION. I hate to be a pessimist, but I think it's very telling that currently, this dog isn't often recognized as a Pit Bull.

And NO, I don't keep him on that chain (not that it would hold if I wanted to); I stuck him on it because I didn't want him running into the garage b/c my GSD was kenneled in there and I need to keep them separate. Last thing I need is someone jumping into someone else's kennel.
He was even called a Weimeraner (repeatedly) as a puppy. He is larger than my ideal (54lbs), but yet called "too small." His head is IMO very nice, but "not massive enough." This "bully" thing has gotten to the point where the (even) younger generation doesn't have a clue that they are NOT true Pit Bulls, as bulldogs were intended. I have tried to talk to a few who were curious about Simon (after they asked what kind of dog he was) and they look at me like I'm nuts. If it doesn't have Gotti or Razor's Edge stuff behind it, isn't blue or straight red (and these are different breeds now, you know) they've never even heard of it. I get asked what he is, I answer, and I get back "what kind?" Then they proceed to educate (or is it edumucate?) me on the different breeds of Pit Bulls- red nose, blues, various sizes, etc. Who knew?!
The other main issue, and I think the biggest problem is this:
The media et al has made it so that those true fanciers don't want to bother anymore; it's too risky for all involved. Instead, the only people (and I use that term loosely) interested are the scum of the Earth. Unfortunately, they're quite busy churning out their products, and this is all we see. Unless someone is really trying to educate themselves on Pit Bulls, they will have little choice but to think that these monstrosities responsible for these incidents are what Pit Bulls are. Sad. I feel like I missed out due to my age (and I'm not that young, really) and I bet my son will never see a true Pit. The humane societies et al are really making a huge mistake w/the track they're on in dealing w/dog fighting, but that's a whole 'nother topic.

How is why I just stated below at all stating anything but a question? I think you read way to much into it. As far as another Pitbull episode just was stating all I was hearing in the news. Look at my last sentence. All the way around included the dog. I can't help it that all I have personally heard about attacks was the pitbull. So how you got ban the pitbull is beyond me. As far as me only wants GS is my choice. Do I love to pet all dogs that I see, yes. My dog has a little friend who happens to be a Gray Hound. They get along great from the 1st time they met, which was on my dog's territory. Never met before... They came in the house together like they have know each other all of their lives. Very accepting. That is how she is with all dogs, well she never met a pitbull. I still would be very leary because you never know how they were raised. I'm sorry but that is how I feel. To anyone else who has or loves this breed, then that's great for you. But you should not put someone down because they don't share the same feelings. That's what makes us all different.
I just don't understand why pit bulls seems to be the only breed that you hear about that is always killing someone. Either it's a child mostly... now it's an adult. It's a shame all the way around on how this turned out.

by Jenni78 on 08 March 2010 - 04:03
Dodie, you simply don't understand what I write, so let's cur out, ok? That means QUIT....in case you didn't get it. Enjoy your dog and her little friends and leave Pit Bulls alone. And me too, please. I have tried to address you decently, but you weren't happy with my tone...and it's not going to improve as long as you play that same card over and over and claim ignorance or curiosity. You didn't get the reaction you'd hoped for in this thread, so you're backpedaling. You came on here, guns ablazin', gleefully posting a Pit Bull attack, and for what good? Can you answer that please? Who benefits from spewing hatred? Does this sound like innocent curiosity or ignorant judgment and hatred?
Dodie writes:Just another issue with pit bull. I wonder why all of a sudden this dog turned on the people he has known for year. I know people say any dog can turn, however you never hear of a GSD doing this. I just don't understand why pit bulls seems to be the only breed that you hear about that is always killing someone. Pit Bulls are NOT the only breed you hear about; they're just the current one. You cannot possibly expect me to believe you have heard of NO OTHER BREED attacking besides a Pit Bull. When I was a kid, it was Dobermanns that I remember morons warning about their brains swelling and other lunacy. The trend dictates much of what we hear about. The trendiest dogs are the ones going downhill fastest. And I just recently had someone warn me that Caleb was the age when German Shepherds "turn." So God help you when they come for your dogs! Slippery slopes ahead!
Lord...where oh where has critical thinking gone?
Abhay, WHO is that gorgeous creature in your new avatar? I think there's something wrong w/it; you'd better pack him up and send him my way. (Him, right?)

Dodie, my dream would be for you to be more tolerant. I wish you would be more like your beautiful GSD. She sounds like the Will Rogers of the dog world. She never met a dog she didn't like. I bet if she was properly introduced to some Pit Bulls, she would like them.
Then again, perhaps she would learn bad habits from them. Some Pit Bulls are known to frequent Bars and Taverns. I have heard of those who love the night life. If your lovely girl begins to stay out late, comes home smelling of wet Pit Bull, and if she becomes disobedient and talks back to you, then we will have to stop any further contact with Pits.
Perhaps we could let her attend a Pit Bull 12 Step Program. Hi, my name is MAX. I'm a Pit Bull Maniac. Hi MAX!
Hopefully we can find peace somewhere in the middle.
Jenni, When I first got on the net in 97, there was this Whacko GEO Pit Bull Chat. It was freakin Nuts. One night some Doctor out in Cali, had a son of Frisco for sale on the chat. The dog was almost 2 yrs old. The pic in my avatar is the pic the Doctor posted. I immediately purchased the dog. He was the clone of his grandsire, CHINAMAN. He was gentle to a fault with humans and also with females. His name was MANCINI. I called him Boomer.
Boomer would have been a perfect gentleman and an excellent escort for Dodie's girl.

Dodie -- weird place, isn't it....no matter what you say here, "someone" will always twist what you say and make a big deal about it.....don't worry about it--not your fault.

by Dodie on 08 March 2010 - 13:03
I know all I can say is whatever. Someone just should be on medication. I will never be tolerant of any little one being killed by a dog. No matter what the breed. In my area, again, I have not heard of any other breed doing this thing. Again, that is in my area. Jenni, there is nothing at all that was decent about the way you responded to me. You just don't get it at all. What part of it SEEMS that is all you hear are you confused about. I'm sorry that you are so sensitive about this subject. Who benefits from spewing hatred? (Jenni) Are you kidding? I did not gleefully post it. Just statine current events. What the hell is Caleb when the dog will turn? I guess now you are saying that all dogs will turn. Boy, tha's special. Well unfortunately, I would love o stay on here all day and continue this stupid debate, but I have to go to work. Hope you have a good day Maggie!.

Then why didn't you just post "Another episode of a dog attack"? Why was it necessary to specify Pit Bull? That is exactly the reason the public is getting so freaky about pit bulls...media headlines. This is a serious problem because you wind up with kids (and even adults) thinking that the only dogs who will bite them are pits, instead of learning to read and be mannerly with ALL dogs.
