For the last time, Schutzhund is NOT work! It's a sport and the dogs and their trainers and handlers train for "sport" as a team.
I think you have a very human centric view of schutzhund. Yes its sport for the human, but it can still be work from the dog’s perspective. The dog knows nothing of points, trophies or glory. He does it for the same reason he does any other type of work because of drive, training and a will to please. So from the dog’s point of view it is work. Now I think it is open for debate what type of work is appropriate for the evaluation of a breeding GSD, but to declare that it is not work is a bit myopic in my opinion.

Yes its sport for the human, but it can still be work from the dog’s perspective. - Not disagreeing here. For some dogs it is a matter of life and death (in their mind). For some it's a game, for some it's a sport, hard to tell, they can't speak and express themselves with words very well.
The dog knows nothing of points, trophies or glory. - Agree. Neither do I.
He does it for the same reason he does any other type of work because of drive, training and a will to please. - Again, I agree. Since our noses can't sniff explosives or run with the sheep and their noses and legs can, we use that drive, training and will to please to aid us and work for us. In return we give them shelter, food, water, love, respect and a place int he pack. It's a symbiotic relationship.
So from the dog’s point of view it is work. - See above.
Now I think it is open for debate what type of work is appropriate for the evaluation of a breeding GSD, but to declare that it is not work is a bit myopic in my opinion. - It's training, for sport. I would much rather it becomes a breed evaluation again, but, it became a sport, for points, ego, money, bragging rights, prestige and glory. Sometimes, it is genuinely for the love of the breed and the dog.
