Can anyone give me a good way to know if a puppy is a long coat. The puppies are only 3 1/2 weeks old. I have not had a long coat and am not sure how to tell if there are any in the litter. Thanks for any help you can give. :-))

Even at that young age, I have noticed a wavy coat alont the back of the neck extending to the back. That wavy coat eventually gives way to a huge furball, expecially around the ear area, by 8 weeks of age. Those are usually, from my experience, the pups that will be long-haired.

I had two in my last litter and to me, it was obvious by touch very early. Their coats felt very silky when compared to the other pups. They also both got the wavy mane that was mentioned by a couple of weeks old. I also had a plush pup, and he did not have that "different" feel to his coat.

Thanks for the input. I will go and check necks, ears and feet. I don't think they are all that wavy. It will be interesting to see how they develop. Sounds like I should be able to tell already if they are coats.

LOOK CAREFULLY AT ALL PUPS, THE ONE THAT HAS A SLIGHT WAVE TO HIS COAT, ESPECIALLY WHEN DAMP OR WET IS MOST LIKELY GOING TO BE A COAT. THE NORMAL ONES HAS A SLEEK SMOOTH COAT COMPARED TO THE ONE WITH A LITTLE WAVE. IT IS USUALLY ON THE HEAD FIRST AND MOVES BACK OVER THE BACK. TRY AND BRUSH THE PUP AFTER BEING DAMP, WAIT TILL IT DRIES. IF ANY WAVE AT ALL IT IS MOST LIKELY GOING TO BE A COAT, IN MY CASES IT HAS BEEN FOR SURE.

A long coated 3 1/2 week old puppy, as well as a softer coat, quite often appears to have a different shaped head to the others, this due to coat. The head appears to be oblong, not a wedged shaped.

90 % of the long coat puppies will have this different look. Some Germans call that monkey faces. I agree with Chance. Also, even if their coat is not any longer at the beginning weeks, you can most of the times feel the difference. If you touche a normal coated one, even as a puppy their coat feels a lot denser than that of a long coat. But there are also some exceptions to the rule. Some don't turn out to be coats and some do. The puppy I'm getting looks like she might be plush coat but doesn't look any different from her siblings. She has bigger bone though. I'd show a picture of her, but where do I post that?

You cannot tell a long coat puppy because of the "length" of coat when they are very young. At a few days old they start to have a differant look to their face......it almost looks "schnauzer" like. As they get older the hair is more pronounced on their faces around the eye brows, muzzles and top of head. It's usually "softer" to feel and may sometimes even have a wavy look. Some puppies have great coats and are not long coats...but people mistake them for such. I have been very good at picking the "coats" out of litters at a very young age......usually when they are about 9-12 days old. If anyone would like to send a face picture of a "questionable" puppy...I would be willing to try to help.
