Lets see, I will tell you what she recomended after your opinions...  she took a good x-ray perhapse legs pulled down too much??  Dog is 23 months, daughter of a VA, out cold, and in heat during this x-ray... you rate the hips, breed or not breed?

Can you shrink the photo?

little better view thanks

Bitches should never, never have their hips xrayed when they are in season as the hormonal changes can cause joint laxity and that is what I am seeing on this xray. The right side looks very loose and shallow and there may or may not be some changes occuring at the neck.  In addition, the ball looks like it is flattening.  The left side looks better, but could be deeper and tighter. If this were my dog and I liked her  otherwise, I'd wait a few months after she goes out of season and do her again. The xray is well positioned.

Blitzen, I agree with you 100%. I wish there was more pelvic coverage here. I woul also wait a few months and try again.

I also think Blitzen is correct in everything she said.  I also wish the sockets were deeper/rounder and there was better seating in the left hip (right in the picture) but that could be a bit difference if she were not near a heat cycle when pictures were taken.  I would not judge her hips at all until they were re-taken in a month or two.

Interesting info... lets just say the bitch was not in heat, these are her hips, does she get spayed?

The left side looks better, but could be deeper and tighter.

Positioning looks ok, but one hip (the dogs left) is not tight enough in the socket and the head of the femur looks like it is changing shape.  Maybe it is just not clear on my computer and is better than it looks, but I think that hip will look worse, not better in a years time and will not get a good result.  Hope I am wrong.

Thanks, you guys are great for sharing your experience and gives me more confidence in my vet. First off my vet said it was difficult for her to give an opinion what OFA would rate this x-ray because it is so subjective, she also mentioned the problem with the heat cycle. Her advice to me was not to breed the female until I cold get a could reading on the x-rays because of the questionable left side. This combined with the advice here leads me to take a new series in a couple of months.

This bitch is really nice in almost all aspects and I have a good match for pairing. Are the problems seen here, baring drastic change due to hormones, enough to preclude breeding in your opinion?  Thanks
