Scoutk9GSDs

by Scoutk9GSDs on 11 November 2007 - 19:11

Abhay, I think it's time we give up. Clearly, PSP is twice as dumb as we originally thought. Facts are of little importance to this individual; we have proven over and over again, from valid sources, that his thinking is serioulsy flawed, his "facts" are preposterous, and his fear is not only irrational but dangerous, and yet all he can do is continue on with this ridiculous, pathetic drivel. It is clear that he would not know a Pit Bull (American Pit Bull Terrier) if it bit him in the ass.

"PTS" any dog (PB) who shows aggression to a human. Ok, fine, if it's *unwarranted* aggression. "PTS" any dog (PB) who shows aggression to another DOG????? Are you f'ing kidding me??? LOL. Fantastic; then pts any GSD who shows aggression to a human. Poof! There go your protection sports! There go your PPDs! There go your PSDs!

I guess I'm in the minority here, having worked equal number of GSD and other protective herders and APBTs. I used to foster them and often had several at a time. Not even well-bred dogs, either. I venture to say that your average poorly bred APBT has a better temperament than your average GSD. We tolerate disgusting weakness in our GSDs in this country; why then do we hold Pit Bulls to such ridiculous standards as to say an animal aggressive dog should be PTS? Do we kill our GSDs for cat chasing/killing? No, we praise their prey drive.  Do we PTS a GSD for aggression toward a human outside of training? No, we say he's "got great civil drive." You see my point...

A PB kills an animal, and some are moronic enough to call it HOMICIDE, lol. Um, homicide involves a human. Animals are unable to commit murder.

My two cents:

I get very tired of Breed-Bashing on this forum!

(The only dogs that ever aggressively acted on me were a lab-dalmation mix, and, ironically, a GSD.)

Dogs with high prey-drives should not be "tested" in family environments. I had a wonderful SchH GSD who I called "Ice." Ice had low civil drive, but an exceptionally high prey drive. While I loved him very much, when the kids arrived I did not let him in the house with them because I knew if one of the children ever tripped his prey drive it would be a very -bad- situation.

If someone has a breed with a history of prey-drive, then it is the owner's responsibility to take care of the situation. I love pitbulls, think thy're wonderful dogs, but I would never test one with kids running and squealing infront of it. Bam, prey.

Being bred to attack and latch on to other dogs, Pitbulls are designed to ignore submissive actions in other breeds (humans included). Most dogs will back off once they've "won" in fight situations. Pitbull breeder has over-ridden this instinct. The pitbull was originally bred to latch on to something and not let go. Hence: "bulldogged determination."

An interesting historical note is that the Pitbull was never originally bred to do protection, or show any human aggression. In the Ring both dogmen had to wash each other's dog before the sport began. In the Ring, if either dogman felt his dog was loosing horribly he could walk into the ring and lift his dog up. The equivolent of throwing in the towel. It was really only after the ban on dogfighting that prompted the circuit to go underground; then we see an increase of pitbull-human incidents because the "sport" is no longer regulated and dogging rules are no longer followed.*

Petey, the dog on Little Rascals was a pitbull, as was Laura Ingles Wilder's ("Little House on the Prarie") dog, Jack.

The Doberman Pinscher is the only breed of dog created specifically to pursue humans. Yet they are known for being good family dogs. "Velcro-Dogs." Rotts, GSDs, Beaucerons, etc. are all converted herding dogs eventually designed to be "multi-function" canines by redirecting the prey/herding drive to prey/protection drive.

Herding dogs with reformed prey-drive; but there are still some individuals of "sheepdog" lineage I wouldn't trust within 10 feet of the kids. Owners have to be aware of what they had. Certain pit lines are much more potentially aggressive than others. Just as some GSD lines are well known for being "hot" and "hard," and others are "soft."

*I do not support dog-fighting, legal or otherwise. BUt it was a standardized sport at one time, and when it was allowed, the dogs were better treated because there was no need to hide the fact that your dog was a pit-dog. That freedom alowed the breed more positive exposure out of the ring.

I hope that making personal attacks makes you feel better and is a great consolation to you when Animal Control shows up with a few Deputies to take away your dogs.  It is always easier to blame "the Media" and others when you , as breeders could be doing something to improve matters.  Why do I say thta breeders are responsible?  These dogs did not just magicly appear, they were bred to be what they are. You need to pull your head out of the sand.

BTW, one of my best friends was one of your "old time breeders" of the PBT.  His take is that he would not have one of todays dogs .because they have been ruined.

"why then do we hold Pit Bulls to such ridiculous standards as to say an animal aggressive dog should be PTS?"

Because the fact is that deserved or not they do have a bad reputation and if you want to overcome that they will have to be better than the average.

Breeders?  I don't believe in breeding.  By Breeders I guess you are talking about the millions of the blind out there with garbage so called Pitbulls, who have no idea what so ever about bloodlines, desired traits or anything else.  These millions of BYB's think they already know it all. They cannot be told different.  They have learned all about it in the Newspapers, Television, and from their Peers.  They have learned all they know about APBT's from the media.

One of your best friends was an Old Time Breeder?  He sure never taught you anything did he?

What the media does not portray are the facts behind the aggression and the owner's role in the behavior of the dog.

For example :

Dog's fate devastates family
Judge orders shepherd destroyed after vicious attack

BY LINDA STEIN

PRINCETON TOWNSHIP -- A family whose beloved German shepherd faces death for having led a dog attack on a landscaper is devastated by the news but vows to continue to fight to save him.

"He needs to come home," said Guy James, the Princeton homeowner who managed to call his dogs off the landscaper, but only after the worker was severely mauled in the June 5 attack.

"He's innocent. He did nothing more than protect my wife. He never bit anyone until she was grabbed and pulled to the ground," James said.

Congo has been ruled vicious by a municipal judge and ordered put down.

"As a family, it's destroyed our way of living," said James, 46. "We're just consumed with the whole thing."

The landscaper, Giovanni Rivera, has won a $250,000 insurance settlement as a result of serious injuries he sustained in the attack, which occurred when he and others disobeyed instructions from James not to get out of their car until Congo and several other dogs on the property could be sequestered for safety.

Rivera, a Trenton man, was on the 10-acre, fenced property on Stuart Road to do yard work. The landscaping crew had arrived before 7 a.m., about an hour before they were expected.

James, who was about to take a shower, called out a window to them in Spanish, telling them to get back in their car and wait because the dogs were in the backyard being fed.

While the dogs, two 2 1/2-year-old German shepherds and their four 6-month-old puppies, had not had problems with people on the property before, James said in an interview that he didn't want them to interfere with the workers. Also, he wanted the workers to wait until he was dressed so that he could tell them what to do, he said.

Instead, Rivera and another worker got out of the car after a few minutes and the dogs began to bark. That worker began to hit the dogs with a metal rake and Elizabeth James, Guy James' wife, yelled for him to stop. Meanwhile, Rivera, who was afraid of the dogs, grabbed her from behind and pulled her to the ground, causing her to scream. At that point Congo began to bite and scratch Rivera and some of the puppies joined in.
