the hex obed clip is about as good as i was expecting, i will keepp it as a reference. i have seen malli's doing it a bit more spectacularly  but they are a smaller/lighter type so will not compare. also got a lead to a trainer website via pm i will follow up on.

thanks comments, training talk soooooo much good.

I think we are not talking about the same thing when we think "flip finish". Your flip finish is my swing finish. I've seen small dogs do a flip finish where they launch themselves into the air so high that their rear feet are almost above their handlers' heads.  The handler usually commands that by throwing his left  arm up. The dogs can twist around in mid air and end up sitting in a perfect heel position without putting their rear feet down first. It's fun to watch Thumbs Up. I wish I could find a video to demonstrate it.

Here's a couple (poor quality) picture series' of the airborn flip. I had never seen a dog do this before until I went to this trial. There were a couple there. It is hugely comical to watch.

There was also a dog that would stand up on his hind legs and waddle into a heel position before setting all four feet back on the ground at this trial... can't remember which one though, but he was as tall as his owner when he did it which was amusing. I suspect she had tried to train him out of the launch-flip and that was the result.

Ha, ha, love it. Imagine a toy dog doing that jumping 3 times higher than the GSD did. The ones I've seen looked like they were spring loaded. I doubt a large breed dog could launch itself high enough to cause damage when it landed.

Those pics are pretty representative of what Jagger does.

big dogs cant do it  ????

That's not what I would call a flip finish, the dog doesn't launch itself straight up in the  air over the handler's head while it turns forward into a heel position. Your dog is doing what we AKC people refer to as a swing finish; we see that all the time in OB trials. The dog in the still photos is doing a flip finish that's about as good as any large breed dog can do. Generally the smaller the dog, the higher it can jump.

why would you want the dog to be airborn, what is the extra value there ?

by Blitzen on 01 April 2015 - 14:04

Beats me, I don't want my dogs to do it and never teach it. I think it's more of a trick than a proper finish.
