Either the male is too young, the bitch is not ready or has a faulty heat, or the male has a low thyroid or other glandular dysfunction or other illness. In any event, if this is a byproduct of the dog having a meduical illness or dysfunction, he should not be used for breeding by artificial insemination since it is most likely a serious genetic fault. Some bitches never have a proper, normal heat due to glandular dysfunctions and/or interueterine infections or scarring. Best find a helpful, experienced breeder located near you, or a very experienced vet specializing in breeding matters who can give you good counsel on this. It's no matter for any amateur and many vets don't know enough about it.

If your male checks out ok at the vet. I would trust him to know. Do not get upset with him and put undue stress on him or you will have future problems with breeding. Ideally you need to get a quantitative progesterone test done on the female. This is a blood test, where blood is drawn and is the most accurate way to tell when she is ready. Find a vet who can get you the results the same day, as waiting a day or two for results is pointless. Also remember that a bitch's cycle can vary quite drasticly from one bitch to another. I have one bitch that does not become fertile until day 25!! That threw us off for a long time, as the normal breeding days are day 10 and 13! So, it could be early for her. Good luck! Debby
