For those who use Ivomec 1% Injectable Solution, what dosages are you currently using?
Due to tha fact I am not a vet and can not legally give doses w/o putting myself in risk of a lawsuit. I will say this "if you oder your ivomec through a company or propylene Glycol (which I use to cut mine with) they will give you doses. Or you can call them and ask they might just tell you.
Using the 1% solution I give my adult dogs 1/2 cc on top their food every other month.
If you want to cut it use a sugared (not diet) orange soda. Risky using glycols.
You can do it monthly but the mosquito larve need 3 months before any damage usually takes place.
Plus, Ivermectin can interfere with a dog's reproductive cycle.
The best heartworm treatment for German Shepherds is Interceptor which in the US you need to get through a veterinarian.
Birdy...
i use 0.1 CCs per 10 pounds of body weight. this dosage was recommended by a respected vet school in the US. this is ok for GSDs, but not all breeds.
I use the same dosage as blackrooster. I have used this method since 1992.

Here is another "formula" I found while researching proper dosages, anybody agree/disagree? Those who are giving .1cc per 10 pounds of straight 1% solution, there is a possiblitly of overdosing if just using for heartworm preventative according to this formula.
The proven dosages are:
Heartworm prevention - 0.003-0.0066 mg/lb
Roundworm - 0.023-0.09 mg/lb
Hookworm - 0.023 mg/lb
Microfilaricide - 0.023-0.09 mg/lb single dose (Let your veterinary treat!)
The proven dosage for a 51-100lbs dog 272mcg. This is the amount of Ivomec in Heartgard (Brown Tablets).
Ivomec 1% solution contains 10,000 mcg (micrograms), which Ivomec delivers in 1mL (cc). A dog only needs 3 mcg of Ivomec, per pound of body weight per month to keep them heartworm free!
So - if 1 cc of Ivomec contains 10,000 mcg, we can bring that number down by mixing it with propylene glycol (dont use water, oils, milk, etc. the Ivomec wont mixed correctly. So youll never know the amount of Ivomec youre actually giving). Which actually works as a carrier agent for the Ivomec. 9 parts - propylene glycol to 1 part Ivomec. That will deliver 1,000 mcg of Ivomec per 1 cc. Then, you only give (orally) 0.1 cc of the mixed Ivomec per 30 lbs of body weight.
I actually use the Zimectrin Gold that is sold in tube for horses, It has a stronger dose of Iver 1.55% to be exact but lower than most Iver's, But the huge difference in ingredient is Praziquantel 7.75% which is good for tapes. total active ingredients is 9.30 I use Pyrantel Pamoate for rounds in small puppies. Anyway It's a super small dosage of the ZGold that is needed, .05 is all that is needed for heartworm prev. and Tapeworm control for a dog around 60#'s. But am not giving advice here just saying what I use and have had no problems yet, but am well aware there are dangers using Iver products in dogs. And frankly I do not tell buyers of puppies about Zgold, I tell them to take the pup to the vet every 3 months or so, (ask the vet) for dewormings. Your vet is always your best bet, My vet and I get along very well. He did not tell me to use this, I found it by accident while needing to find Praziquantel for tapes, and our local place was out of it for dogs, so found it this way, went home and 2 hours later had worked down the dosage.
Oh yes and to carry to the gut, I just put in small amount of food, and do each dog individually.
Dakine,
sounds like you've done your homework, I might need to adjust my dosage as well given the numbers you just put up ! Good Job, Thank You for sharing !!
and yes Iver's are a little scarry for dogs, So again I would not be suggesting anyone use it, Talk to your Vet.
I also use the same as Black Rooster. Birdie where have you found that using it monthly will interfear with the reproductive cycle. This is the second time I have seen it on the messageboard but no one can cite the authority. When I started using it years ago I asked me vet about it and he said,"I can't tell you how to use it because it is not approved for dogs but
I can tell you how I give it to my dogs." I have used
Ivermectin for years with no adverse affects.
