My 3 year old female is supposed to come into heat end of this month/early next month. she's lost her coat (fur was coming out in clumps) and my male has been following her and sniffing her these past couple of days. for the past 3 days she's been fussy about her food and only takes a few bites. other than that her behaviour has been normal. so today i just checked her to see if she was in heat cos i didn't notice any blood drops and was just wondering. when i checked i saw a little bit of brown discharge and now i am worried cos i dont know if this is normal or not. she keeps licking herself so thats another reason i didnt notice the discharge until i checked today. the discharge is a dark brown colour but it is not dropping all over the place. only if i squeeze slightly i notice the discharge coming out and then she licks herself immediately. her vagina is not swollen or anything.

i'm worried about her so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mav

In my experience, All the signs you have described except for the picky eating are normal signs of a female coming into heat. My girls will blow their coats  and just before heat becomes more noticable there is brownish discharge that will turn to red over the next few days. The swelling can start before or after the brown discharge. Your boy is following her around because he knows. AS far as the change in her eating habits, I would not worry as long as she is acting normal. If it is related to the heat it will take care of itsself.

Best Wishes,

Jennifer

I would take her to the vet ans have her checked. She may have an open pyometra. Can you take her temperature yourself? Normal for a dog is about 101.5 F. Pyometra is an infection in the uterus and can be quite serious if left untreated. Good luck, Theresa

thanks guys for the advise. I took her to the vet and the temp was normal. vet said it may be a slight infection but wasnt too sure so they did a test to check. will get the results tomorrow.  but she did eat her dinner tonight just like her usual self which makes me feel a whole lot better. the weather is ridiculously hot where i live so i think maybe thats why she doesnt like to eat during the day.
Thanks again, will keep you updated on what the vet says tomorrow.

Glad you got her to the vet and it is hopefully minor and she will recover quickly!
