One of our dogs partook in a rather large bag of salted cashews and appears to have munched a few pistachios as well. Should I be worried?

by BubbaJ on 13 June 2009 - 00:06

I would be worried more about the amount of salt your dog ingested than nuts themselves. Macadamias are toxic, but all nuts are rich in phosphorus and aren't generally good for a dog. Pistachios may (or may not) contain aflatoxin and dogs are sensitive to it much more so than humans. I'd induce vomiting and call a vet. And watch the dog for the signs of kidney problems.

Not really good for him, but won't kill him. I wouldn't worry too much but would monitor it half-assedly until out of the system.

Let him dispose of it through "natural and regular channels", if he didn't already and he'll be okay.

ONLY THING YOU HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IS WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO MUNCH ON TONIGHT. THE DOG IS FINE. HE IS VERY SATISFIED.

I have had dogs steal mass amounts of cashews with no ill effect...other than my snacks being gone. :-) I did not know macadamias were toxic. That's good to know, even though I never have them. Thanks for the info.
