Some have micro chips.

From the beginnin of 2010 on the SV-pups get no tattoos anymore. They all have to be chipped.
That was a decision of the last SV- Bundesversammlung.

Chipping is always better than tattooeing, only drawback is that you need a scanner to read. But these are getting popular so no worries

How about for pups born in the US that will be dual registered?

if you import a pup from Germany with beginning of 2010 it will only be chipped. If you have a pup that is born in the US and want it also be registered with the SV, I would assume that you also would have to chip the pup. This is a good question, I guess to get the right answer, it would be advisible to ask the SV.
