Does anyone know why Panalog would be used for an ear infection?

My roommate Susan rescued an  adorable little female Tibetan Terrier and she had a number of health problems.  One of them was an untreated ear infection in both ears, lots of black gunk. She was told that it was not ear mites.

I asked Susan if she knew whether it was bacterial or yeast or what?  She did not know.

Here is this sweet little angel, we are so happy to have here here where we can take care of her.  She had been used for breeding.

The acive ingredients are Nystatin-Neomycin sulfate-Thiostrepton-Triamcinolone Acetate.  So you have four basic therapeutic effects: anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, antifungal and antibacterial. Most vets will use it if the client does not want an ear swab done. And it is cheap.

Panalog is awesome stuff and it definitely works for ear infections- but I thought they took it off the market a few years back? Has it been re-released?

Typically Panalog is used to treat yeast infections of the ear, and other areas of the body such as between the toes from excessive licking.

I don't believe Panalog is available any longer, but the same medication is currently sold under the name of Animax, by Pharmaderm.  This is most likely the generic version, and a Vet RX is required.  Same exact ingredients as Panalog.

If it is a yeast infection, you can make up an ear wash of vinegar and water, to wash out the gunk from the ear and to normalize the PH.  I caution that a vet exam is usually recommended to insure there is not a perforated ear drum which is causing the trouble.  Doubtful that there would be two perforated eardrums, but treatment should be dictated according to the situation.

Or if you prefer, a similar ear wash is also available from the Veterinarian;  Epi-Otic, by Virbac Animal Health.
Best results are to first wash the inside of the ears with one of these solutions, massage the ear base to moisten and loosen the debri, then clean out with a q tip (Carefully!!) and then with a dry soft rag.

Following this apply the Animax down into the ear canal generously and massage the ear base,  2 x daily or as directed by your vet.

Treatment results are best if the Animax is continued for at least 5 days, more if a really bad infection is present.

You may have to re-clean out the ears if there is still lots of black greasy material present that has later become dislodged after using the ear wash.

Thanks everyone.  I am emailing this link to Susan and I encouraged her to register.

We worry so much about Maggie and the hard life she has had.  Susan wants to do everything she can to make her happy and healthy.

Maggie is the sweetest dog ever, she is just an angel.  She was used for breeding and then just thrown away like a dirty tissue.  I am sure that her puppies sold for a small fortune and probably had lots of return puppy buyers as her temperament and strong calm demeanor is pricless.

The pads of her feet were very rough and her teeth ground down to nothing as if she had been living on gravel and nothing to do but chew rocks.

Pharaoh is in LOVE*LOVE*LOVE with Maggie.  He constantly brings her presents and displays what a studly dude he is with wild cavorting and leaping like a hunter jumper.  She was wearing an E Collar and he puts toys in it for her.

As a good strong woman, she growls and sneers when he is too overbearing.  She likes him but requires him to be a gentlman.

Michele, you guys are wonderful taking her in. Pharaoh seems very happy too :)  My Sabin is a rescue also, he is such a good boy, no one wanted a big black GSD can you believe it. He was meant to be with me. They are sent from heaven.
Always,
Cee

Susan and her wonderful daughter Kari get all the credit for rescuing Maggie.  She and her daughter searched long and hard to find her and there were many shocking surprises.

I can't think of anything better than a big black GSD.  Pharaoh is a lot of dog, too much drive and enthusiasm but he is so kind and sweet it makes all the hard work so worth it.

That's interesting. Here in Canada we can get Panalog ointment and cream. I have never seen it used in our clinics for ear infections, though. For infections, we use Surolan.

I have never heard of Surclan.

What is in it?
