just got my first gsd puppy yesterday he is 13 weeks old. black and tan great looking dog and is akc registered as were both parents. His ears are up at the base and all the way to the tip, but at the tip one ear flips foward and the other backwards. Is this normal? Ive seen them both flip forward at the tip while they are starting to come up but not seen one flip backwards(but I havent been around alot when they were pups).. Im going for my first vet visit friday to get his second set of shots. Wanted to see what experienced people on here have to say before I ask the vet... PIC SECOND POST DOWN

Ken

He looks very normal to me. Good, sturdy (not hard!) chewing objects are excellent for toning the muscles that raise and move the ears. Raw chicken necks are excellent sources of cartilage and provide a natural balance of both calcium and phosphorus. A teaspoon of dry gelatin sprinkled once daily onto his food will help build ear cartilage-just use it sparingly or he could develop diarrhoea.

The ears will "flip-flop" while the puppy is developing his adult teeth. Just do not be tempted to add OTC calcium as a supplement to his food. The chicken necks are cheap and the puppy will love them. At his age I would not let him eat an entire neck in one (1) session-I would break the necks into halves and spread them across a couple of days. It is perfectly okay for him to chew, crush, and ingest "green" bones from raw meat sources. One caveat - remain mindful of how much green bone is ingested, as it can form a rubbery mass that can clog the intestines.

Best Regards,
Bob-O
