well, update from the mites thread i started.........after researching online, i decided on a combination of flea and tick shampoo (drastically reduced scratching after that), lime and sulfur dip (poor fluffy is completely confused, sopping wet, stinking to high heaven, and very upset about the cone on her head to prevent her from licking it), will be starting the dogs on some brewer's yeast fortified with garlic (huge container left from my dog bandit, i never had parasite problems with her, even when my cats were crawling with fleas) and a preventative spot-on monthly treatment after the dips are all done (i read the dips need to be spaced out 5-7 days for a month).
well it stinks to high heaven in here, but i did some research on those ivermectin injections the vet wanted me to do, and i read that they are 100% effective, but not usually done unless/until other treatments have been tried and failed.
since so far i have spent alot less than the vet's $180, i decided to give it a whirl.
i did fluffy first. it said not to let them lick it. i only have one cone so i have to wait to do spunky.
does anybody know how long this smell will last? it's awful!

Yes it is awful, there is a lymdip spray that is scented. It still stinks. Yes do not allow animal to lick hair coat until dry to prevent ingestion. How many treatments did your vet tell you to do. Here it is every 7 days for three treatments. Did your daughter stop itching too? Good luck this has been a bad year.
Always,
Cee

i didn't talk to the vet about it. i just read some info online. a site about how to get rid of sarcoptic mange and how to use lime dip. it said every 7 days for a month. yes, emma has stopped itching and scratching. i told her try to stay away from the dogs until the bugs are gone.  i wasn't really sure if that was definitely what it was until one night i had spunky on my lap for about 15 minutes and the next day there was 8 or 9 of the those big red spots itching like crazy on my leg where spunky sat on me. then a few more popped up on one of my hands. it was driving me nuts. i thought if this is this bad for me, imagine how the dogs are feeling! flea and tick shampoo was the next day and that helped alot. i am hoping this lime dip totally eradicates it...........
my daughter just got home from school. she didn't want to come in, it smells so bad. she has autism and is super sensitive to smells. i gave her the cinnamon air freshener spray and she's walked around spraying for 5 minutes, now, lol. i have fluffy covered up with her pink blanket and an old jacket. she was shivering. she seems to be doing better now and it cut down some on the smell too.

I rescued a dog that had this mange and I had such a time getting rid of it. The pup was so stressed and had a chronic infection....massive worms, and malnutrition too...once she adjusted to her new home, was given good food and clean water, antibiotics to cured the infection and she became strong we were able to get rid of the stuff. it took long 2 months.

Clean water, good balanced food (not just raw or not just purina) some doggie vitamines and a completely clean place to sleep will all help. Any of the places where the dog frequents needs to be cleaned often, as well as any bedding, and mat or pad covers.

I'm not infering in any way that your dog is mistreated, but if it has an unknown chronic condition causing it be become weak, sometimes mange is the first symptom.....this type of mange is usuallly brought on by less then perfect health and stress. Have you had the vet give a complete physical including blood tests for any cronic infection, or other issue that could have given this mange a foothold?.

It is a foul odor and I think it smells like rotten eggs.  Ewwwww.  Everytime I take my female GSD into the dermatologist or to pick up something - their office smells to high heaven of "that odor."

This was a treatment option for my girl who has allergies but I had to tell the dermatologist that I just couldn't do it.  It was a weekly bath for 4-6 weeks at $65 per bath...or I could have wrestled her in my bathtub and house.  Nahhhhh.  It would have been a lot of time out of work to do this to transport her to their office which I don't think would have set too well with my employer.  Not to mention I was told to put blankets and sheets down on the furniture and rugs and then to have them professionally cleaned after the bath regime.

Whew.  Hope the itching stops.  You are brave soul

no blood work. this itching had been going on for a year. last year the vet said it was allergies. come to think of it, fluffy might have brought it with her when i got her, february 18, last year. she came from a bad situation. the guy i bought her from had originally bought her to just sit around and pump out puppies, but changed his mind when she was 4 months, due to a new job cutting down on his time for dogs. (he is unfortunately, still breeding, goldens, poodles, golden doodles, and german shepherds, just throws any 2 dogs together, couldn't care less about bloodlines or even if they have papers).
she came to me pretty skinny (that ol' roy crap was his food of choice), matted (he had not had her groomed once, brushed, bathed, or clipped in the 2 months he had her), unsocialized (terrified of everybody and everything she saw, after sitting with little or no human interaction in a kennel outside with her sister and some other dogs). our vet said it was sad what this guy did to her. she was very mopey. she didn't know how to play. spunky tried so hard to teach her, but it took a week or more. fluffy's arrival was on the heels of the death of nenz, spunky's protector, friend, and great uncle. she lost a valued member of her pack when he went (as did I) and i think that could have been stressful. plus fluffy came from out in the country (wild animals carry it), so that's my best guess where it came from and why. i never really thought about it before, but the timing seems to line up. nenz wasn't ever that itchy like that.
crazee4gsds, thanx. as a mother i am used to cleaning up vomit when my daughter or significant other is sick, (or the dogs, or the cats barf up a hairball, or just plain barf), cleaning mulitiple small animal cages (4 rats, 8 hamsters, and 2 guinea pigs), and the dogs just have to chase a skunk at least once a year, too..........so i can handle pretty much anything if i really have to. :)
well good news is fluffy is mostly dry except her topknot, ears, and puffs on her legs, so after spraying her with baby-powder scented deodorizing doggie body spray, she smells mostly like baby powder and just a tad of rotten eggs. now i get to do spunky tomorrow.....yay.....
