If you could choose either of the two dog food for a 4 month old GSD puppy what would you choose?
1. Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy

or
2. Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy

Do a search on Nutro. Interesting thread on this board a while ago. I used to feed Nutro religiously, NEVER again.
I've never fed Blue Buffalo, don't believe we get that here, so can't comment on it.

Nutro first 6
Chicken, Ground Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Wheat Flour, Rice Bran, Chicken Meal,
BB first 6
Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal (natural source of Glucosamine), Whole Ground Brown Rice, Whole Ground Barley, Whole Potatoes, Tomato Pomace
Of those 2, I'd feed the Blue Buffalo
Barb

Nutro has such a bad rep, I would not feed it. There was a recent recall on their cat food http://www.nutroproducts.com/press-recall/press-recall.html
and the Mars co. closing plants due to contamination makes me want to stay far away from the brands they produce.
RAW is the best diet!

At four months old I would transition to adult food.

Personally I have never and will not EVER feed any of Nutro's products to any of my animals.
Not just because of the problems in the past with recalls but from my own research.
I do know several people that have or do feed Nutro. Some swear by it, others have had problems.
Now, my own experience, I've had the opportunity to speak with several of Nutro's reps recently and over the last few years. They were all very good salespeople and "company men". Well armed with "research, statistics, fancy charts, etc". Bottom line, I couldn't get a simple yes or no or straight answer to ANY question I asked. And NO real information about the products at all. They couldn't even tell me the difference between a puppy formula and an adult formula. When I produced my own research, I was promptly asked if I was a certified nutritionist, vet or a chemist, then wham, bam, end of conversation. Period. That alone, I'd never buy a damn thing from them.
Go with the Blue Buffalo.

Blue Buffalo would be my choice but I'd go for the adult

Blue Buffalo without question.
I would be very careful about switching to an adult food though.
"Due to their initially rapid growth but the long time it takes them to fully mature, large breed puppies have vastly different nutritional needs from smaller breeds. Feeding them a food too high in calcium and phosphorus, as well as overfeeding in general, can lead to serious orthopedic problems." From The Dog Food Project.
I suggest you read this site. It is a god send for anyone that really wants to learn about pet nutrition.

we've used both at different times. as stated above, nutro has been linked to numerous canine deaths. we did not use it long, but when we did, we experienced the vomiting and diarrhea that seems to go along with it. i can say with all sincerity, that we will never feed nutro again. we had better luck with blue buffalo and for a while, the dogs did okay with it. like all the others, after time, there were bouts of diarrhea, pasty crap on their coats, shedding, etc. honestly, the only premium foods that we have not tried are evo and orijen. other than that, we have given them all a chance..........and with very disappointing results. some of them (like timberwolf) were god-awful expensive and the results were the same. yes, we have done the raw thing, too. i still feed some raw, but as a supplement to a kibble diet. a few months ago i made my awful confession that we had finally settled on iams protection formula. white bag, green trim. i never thought i would ever feed iams, but here we are. at that time, i promised to report back with our results. that is the only reason i am posting on a food thread again. we are still on ;the iams and doing well. i am still amazed. they get yogurt occasionally, a few supplements as needed, maybe some raw chicken or a soup bone here and there. the iams has proven to be a suitable staple and i don't mind adding some things as long as the main staple seems to agree with them. if things change, i will post again but for now, we are having good luck with the iams. i might add that it has been very consistent so they must not be in the habit of playing with the formulas as diamond has been known to do.

Never Nutro
Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy no adult dog food The reason the Large Breed is for a slow growth and proper balance for a puppy.. I do not believe in feeding adult dog food to any puppy under 1 yrs old...as I do not believe in feeding , and many bags and brands have it printied right on the bag,,, puppy food to a whelping bitch while in whelp or during whelp or nursing.. It does not have the many many nutrients needed for a bitch...YOur bitch and puppy needs everything it can muster...NATURALLY.....puppies need a balance of certain phosphorus , magnesium, folic and calcium and if done incorrectly the pup ends up in many problems.
add raw meats and cottage cheese, extra virgin Olive oil, yogurt to puppy after 5 months old..helps give moisture to the food as is to be feed to ward off the possiblity of BLOAT and provide calcium in natural and vit c in natural...This is the time when immune system breaks down in a vast majoirity of high drive lined pups when teething and ear structure begins and eradicates the minerals and essential to keep an immune system strong to beat the Red Mange problem, which crops up at this age to 15months, when biggest amount of stress happens.
Blue Buffalo is a very good dog food...I have many of my customers using it both the puppy large breed, and the adult...
Sunshine Nurture Heavenly Harvest Holistic dog food in beige bag, for adults is a great food..no corn no wheat and no soy .....not sold everywhere......google www.sunshineMills.com
