I am thinking of breeding my female to these lines. The male listed is a brother of the male I want to use. He just isn't in the data base and I'm waiting on him to get his hips certified, AKC registration and a few other things that need to be done prior.

I want others opinions of the pro's and con's on putting these two lines together.

Also, I am trying to learn more about the genetic color gene but am a little confused.  My femal is BLK and RED and the male I want to use is sable with tan legs.  What colors couId I expect if this breeding does happen?

Thanks in advance

Here is a good thread to read about genetic colors genes. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/304665.html#305257

As far as your breeding what are you looking to produce?

your female was bred before what did she produce with a show line ? what are those puppies being trained for?

What about the male has he produced a litter or two and what are those puppies doing?

The father and mother of the sire has produced some nice working dogs and come from some really nice working lines. These lines have produced some really nice working dogs that do sport, service work

The father and mother of the dam has produced a couple litters but really nothing has been worked or title from what I see.  they come from Show/working lines  but a little too far back to really see what is being produced consistly .

My guess would be (and this is only a guess) is that you might get  a puppy or two that could  really do sport or work but over all a nice pet litter from just the pedigree and not seeing the dogs themself, testing temperament and so forth.

And just my personal opinion

EK, thanks for your honesty and hope you will read the answers to your questions.

My overall goal is to try and get a few puppies out of the litter that will work and have sound temperments.  One the male's owner is going to take and work it as a police k-9 and i have two working homes wanting a puppy and I was going to try and take one and have it as my detection dog, possibly a dual purpose if the drives are there.  If the rest are just pets that will be fine but want them to have good temperments and trainability as well.  I don't want to sell any puppies that have issues.

The 3 girls my female had produced really good drives and temperments with my male.  Not really any hard dogs.  There were all biting a rag at 6 weeks and had a good hold and carries.  But they were given to friends who just wanted pets.  They learn quick and was good house dogs.  They are strong females though.  2 out of 3 could have done schutzhund or something, I think.

1 of the puppies I still do rag work with here and there when the owner comes in from out of town.  She does well and retains what she learns even over a few months.  The last time I was working her I was teaching her to bark for the reward.  It didn't take more than a minute for her to figure that out.  If the owner could come up more frequently I bet she would be good.

All the puppies are very pack driven and have a lot of prey drive.

My female is a really strong working dog.  I have had a few helpers that I train with say she puts everything she has on the field during protection and hits harder than the workline females.  She has a real good temperment and is extremly protective.  She tracks really well and her obedience if fair.  I am not the best handler and I think she could be better with a more experience person but she found me instead and she loves me to the fullest, even with all my faults.  Plus, I got really nervous on our first SchH I trial and I totally screwed her up on all the phases. ( I guess I try again and may be drink a little first to tak the edge off. LOL)

The male is a dual purpose police k-9 with a local small town police department.  He has had about 12 aprehensions and lots of narcotic finds.  He is has a great temperment and is social when he isn't working.  But when he is in the squad car and the handler is in his uniform the dog is all business.  He has never had a litter before.  This is why I am asking.  I don't know a lot about the lines and wanted more information.

Anyone else, Please give me your honest opinions.  I really enjoy learning from all of you.

I like the sire's pedigree quite a bit.  What I'd say of the dam's would be insulting and based on personal ignorance anyway.  The odds of finding someone familiar with both lines and accurately estimating how the pair would produce, being pretty slim.  Guess you'll be the first.  You might not have any serious "issues" at all, other than settling for shortcomings for your intended purpose.  You may get lucky, and get the single good pup you're looking for, but I would look for a different female to use, one that compliments and reinforces the qualities you want from the male.
