Ok, so I'm putting together my whelping kit, and I would like to know if I'm forgetting anything. Any suggestions?
-Emergency Vet number/full tank of gas
-Thermometer
-Goat/Puppy Milk Replacer
-Bottle/Nipple
-LOTS of towels
-Hemostats
-Nasal Aspirator
-Scale
-Puppy Records
-Iodine
-KY
-Glucose Syrup
-Heating Pads
-Small Rubbermaid tote with heating pad for pups while whelping
-Unwaxed Dental Floss
-Surgical gloves
-Clock/Watch
-Colored Ribbon
-Vanilla Ice Cream
I keep thinking I'm forgetting something, so that's why I'm here.
Thanks in advance!

scissors ( blunt-tipped, like mustache scissors)
water for the bitch
vita-cal (or like) for the bitch
newspapers
whelping box
paper towels ( for your hands or yucky drips)
pencil & paper
telephone
tv
LOTS of coffee
2nd pair of hands for when you have to unload some coffee :-)
camera
snacks
*don't use heating pads*

I can't believe I forgot scissors! LOL Anyway, the whelping box, water and coffee, I thought were a given...hee hee. I'm sorry I didn't elaborate...not actual Heating Pads, like the plug in, I meant rice bags or warmed saline bags used as heating pads (which we used both in the vets office where I worked as a vet tech for 8 years). Sorry for the confusion!!
And yes, my husband, while not the MOST experienced person, will be there to let me have potty breaks or coffee refills.

how many puppies are you expecting?
its the mamma's first litter, right?
would oxytocin be a possible item for the kit, just incase the mamma stops labor with puppies still inside........?

If you have a vet that will accomodate you, I always like to have a dose of Oxytocin for the bitch and a syringe of Dopram for slow puppies (if any).

Yes, this is her first litter, but we don't know how many yet...she's only 15 days. But I have to be prepared, so I'm getting ready now, so I'm not frantic when it comes time.
Oxytocin is a great idea...I will ask my vet if I can get a dose.
Thanks!

i keep oxytocin, and use sparingly. also keep dopram, but have not had to use it (crossing fingers)
what kind of scale do you have? i have been using a fishing scale for the last few years - works great! just make a sling for the puppy, and hang it from the hook. very accurate, grams or ounces. i have a bigger sling for older pups, but the same scale works fine.

I was just going to use a food scale...slinging newborn pups scares me. Is a food scale not going to work?

i used to have a food scale. pups wiggled, needle jumped, not accurate. also can't hold 2-3 week olds.
i made the sling from a washcloth with a bootlace threaded thru corner holes - puppy is snug as a bug! imagine an upside-down parachute which hangs from the fish scale's hook, puppy safely cradled inside.
