What is a good dog, large or small, that is a good companion for a shepherd? I'd like to get them used to smaller dogs especially.

There is no answer for that. It depends entirely on your dog's personality and the small one as well. I would say go for something playful and sturdy. My GSDs have enjoyed playing with pugs, jack russels, schipperkes, and beagles. Can't say I'd enter into ownership of any of those breeds lightly, though.

we have a card. corgi, an american bully & a great pyr and all play hard and happily play with our gsd.
