Two Moons

by Two Moons on 26 March 2009 - 16:03

I'll call the first sign of blood day one altho there were signs three days prior.
On day seven there is flagging and the playful teasing, here have some.
Bred on day eight.  Skip a day.
Bred again on day ten.
Yet on day thirteen still flagging and bred again seventeen days after signs began.
What is an average length of time when a bitch is fertile ?   Not just receptive.
I always figured four or five days at the most.

The problem with breeding too far apart...is that everytime you breed your female...she could possibly have a new litter...So the last breeding could end up to be very immature and maybe not make it...
At the most I will breed my female and then skip a day and breed her once more...Then no more...This assures me that the litter is no more then one day difference...
But to sorta answer your question...my males can notice a difference in the female...two weeks to almost a month before she really comes into full blown HEAT...

I agree Q man,
Actually I was looking for some kind of clinical study or facts as to how long fertilization can take place.
I know there are tests so there must be a timeline.

When I see the first sign of blood, I count that day as the second day, got to throw in an extra day, then I count to day 11,
breed her day 11, then skip a day & breed day 13.

I can fiqure out my GSD's, but my lab is a mystery
I wasn't paying too much attention to my lab, and I hadn't checked her for 3 days straight, and then noticed she was in heat,
my GSD was also in heat, but I noticed her heat right away.
Anyway, I did a progesterone test on my lab cause I had no clue, I did the test on a Wednesday, it was supposed to be
back the next day, and I got busy & didn't bug the vets for the results, so Thursday went by, then I call on Friday and they
say OH, her levels are 4.01, and I say, OH that's low huh?.....and they say no, anything above 2.5 is high, breed her now.
I have not done a progesterone test on a dog for maybe 10 years or so, I believe it cost $40.00 back then, now it's like
$90.00.     I have a very good feeling about the lab, she was flagging and excepting the stud, things went great, she was
bred that Friday, the same day as my GSD, I was expecting the Lab to go into heat in April, I guess the GSD brought her
into heat early.
I'll let you know how the lab does for having pups, they are both due May 18th or there abouts, time to rest up

I googled progestrone test results, and it said when they reach levels 4 to 5 that's the signal to breed them, cause
the level 4 means that there is 3 days till ovulation, and the sperm lives for 5 to 7 days, so I think I'm going to be having some
mysterious Lab pups!!

and I do progesterone testing so I know when she ovulates and when she should be bred! sorry, kinda takes all the mystery out of it using scientific testing and all!!
And what we have found is that when we think they should be bred is often almost a week before they are ready... I am usually on about day 16  (according to my calendar count) or later when we breed vs the old fashioned days 11 and 13.

by Kandi on 26 March 2009 - 19:03

My latest...female starts showing blood, so I count that as day one, By day 13 my male still says "nope", not her first litter and always bred by day 13, but this male is very smart...so off to the vet for progesterone testing and a just in case A.I. Get the results the following day ( day 14) she is still at 2.8.  Now day 16, my male says indeed NOW is the time. So either she started to bleed early, or she is running late this time. Oh, and she has been flirting, firmly standing, and flagging since day 7!!!!

So.......
I'm still in the dark as to how long (in days) a bitch can be fertilized(concieve).
Is it only related to her excepting a male?  Will she except a male past or before ovulation?
There must be some sort of timeline as to how long she can concieve.
A three day window, seven days?   I just figured someone knew.

Moons I may be wrong on this ,however my vet who is now in her 80's says all the females eggs are fertilized in an 18 hour window . Whilst the sperm may still be swimming ,and the bitch may still be flagging and standing those eggs are all done in that 18 hour period. Thats why the days apart between mating make not the difference in days of conception ..Ya need to have the sperm and eggs all  in the right place within the 18 hours to fertilize or be lost . The swimmers live longer then the eggs . The tale of this pup was conceived 4 days after the first pup was conceived would be a fluke .

I know this might be a side step to the actual question but why do you mate one day, skip a day then mate 3rd day?

I've always known it as mate them for 3 days straight and usually by the 3rd day she is not interested in him, has come off season and is highly pregnant.

just curious.

I have found that my last girl by day 7 she was flagging day 8 and 9 she was mated had 2 successful ties and day 10 was out of season and not interested in him. Bless her she has blessed me with 8 puppies!

Mustangz, that's to allow the male to have time to rebuild his supply of sperm. Nothing to do with the female, as the sperm can survive inside her for several days.
