MygsdRebel

My male completely ruined his top right canine tooth during training today. He is at the vet now, and the vet says he has to pull it. Rebel ( The dog ) looks like he chipped the bottom off then it cracked up the center to the root. The vet said he couldn't save it. Has anyone experienced this? Will it overall affect his bitework? He is a HIGH drive dog, and to be frank, I'm really worried. I heard some people had the teeth replaced, and when consulting the vet, he said he couldn't. Soo.. Any advice?

Thanks,
Emily.

If you go to a veterinary dental specialist they can do a root canal, reconstruction, or even dental implants in dogs.  The treatment depends on the severity of the broken tooth and what you want done.  Most regular vets will just pull the broken tooth.  The vet that I work with just had a theoretical discussion with me yesterday on what I would do with my dog if he broke his tooth since I show him.  I knew they did root canals, but I had no idea they do implants too.

IF it were my sport dog  I would take the dog to a dental specialist rather than let the regular vet pull the tooth.  Your vet should be able to give you some referrals.  Also if you have veterinary schools in proximity to you call them for referrals.
What happened that caused the tooth to shatter?

I would think an upper canine missing couldn't help but affect his bitework. Lots of PSDs break teeth and get a nice shiny steel replacement. Does this guy do the dental work for the police dogs?

Well, it's out. And it's huge! He's home and still very groggy, but still ok. I'm pretty sure he did it on the sleeve.. There was some blood on it. But I didnt notice until later when I got him out of the crate. I would have liked a replacement but i bet its too late now, right? He's got the other three to bite, I really do hope one missing isn't too bad.. Emily

Oh yeah, those canines have more beneath the surface than whats showing. They are beeyotch to get out of there.

Yes, the vet in Tulsa does (still) working police dogs.  He has a whole buletin board full of working K-9s.  If anyone could do an implant I'm sure he could.

I'm sorry you had to have it taken out.  I hope he does OK without it.  Please let us know how it affects his bitework.  After it heals completely of course.

One of my dogs recently broke a lower canine. Not bad- not below the pupl but we went to the vet just the same.

My vet says that the crowns do not last. He has pulled several crowns from other vets and pulled root canals that didn't work out. He only recomends pulling on working dogs. The dog should grip normal once he is healed. Most of the grip should be in the molars. The canines would be considered a frontal bite and would be a weaker grip.

Peace.

If your dog is doing a full-mouth grip like he should be, the missing canine will most likely not matter once everything heals up. Just make sure he has enough time to heal completely so he doesn't associate bitework with pain.
