I took Tulla for a follow up today, we are still finding live demodec mange mites. She started at .5 cc and built up to 1.5 cc of ivermectin for the last month. Her feet are still swollen and infected altho not as bad, PODODERMATITIS is a concern.
I am getting ready to place an order for some supplies for the shop and want to go ahead and get the things that I need for Tulla. I know I need pre/probiotics so I will be getting some "Gentle Digest" , any other suggestions?
The vet has her on 68 mg Baytril twice a day for 2 weeks, then 750 mg of Cephalexin twice a day for a month (to help the feet heal) and 1.7 cc's of Ivermectin once a day until gone ( 2 oz). I am feeding her Natures Recipe venison recipe, Raw unfortunately is not possible right now.
I have a small fortune into this rescue and am trying to do everything possible to ensure as much of a complete recovery as possible. I have come to far to give up now.
p.s she was 44.6 lbs when I first got her, she is now 56.6 lbs and all puppy lol

WOW, that is a large daily dose of ivermectin! Usually it's .10 cc per 10lbs! I work with rescued dogs daily and in addition to doing what you already are you may want to use a topical antibiotic spray for her feet to help. I would personally switch the cephalexin to lincocin which does wonders for clearing up bacterial skin infections. Just my 2 cents... probiotics will help the immune system. Keep up the good work, it will eventually pay off although I know how frustrating demo mange is to treat!

you're doing a great job.
I had a rescue many years ago with that mange. It 's difficult to treat because it effects dogs with weak immune systems. As your dog regains its health, it will better be able to fend off the mange, and the prescriptons will work better.
Try to keep the dog as stress free as possible and keep the mange effected areas as clean as practicle.
Keep feeding him good food, making sure it has clean water. a doggie vitimine wouldn't hurt. also some vitimine e gels. They love them.
Don't worry about feeding raw or not feeding raw. Try to find a feed that has 3 or 4 flesh (meat/poltry/fish) ingredients before any grain. Never feed by-products, and flesh meal has less water by weight then fresh flesh so after processing into kibble, the precentage of flesh is higher.

Shandra, your vet sounds as they are treating with all the right meds, the dose for ivermectin to treat mites is alot higher then for heartworm prevention. This winter we have seen also a big issue with sarcoptic also. I hope your dog gets better soon, but these things take time, just do not skip doses or stop medications too early.
Always,
Cee
