I have been lurking on this board for years. I am finally to the point of saying "enough is enough". Why do breeders become defensive, bitter, and slanderous when owners post truth about their dogs? When an owner posts that their dog has health issues, and provides written proof from veterinarians, why does the breeder feel the need to then blast that person all over the internet? It makes the breeder look like a fool. You would think that breeders would want to know if a dog from their lines has issues. It is not a slap in the face to them, it is information for the betterment of the breed. There are disorders that show up 2-3-4 or more generations later so I would think if someone brought to my attention that my lines were throwing a disorder, I'd say thank you and be greatful so I knew what was out there. Any thoughts on this, especially from breeders? Any owners who have been totally disresepcted by breeders for trying to inform them. Please DO NOT name names here. This is for general discussion. THANKS!!! ~Jill Friday

Some breeders want to hear all good about their dogs. When there is a problem healthwise it is always "NOT IN MY LINES, or NO ONE ELSE IN IN THE LITTER CAME UP WITH THIS!" It's as if they want to blame you for a genetic problem. Not all breeders are like this, but the KENNEL BLIND breeders are.

by gsdjill on 15 March 2009 - 15:03

That is exactly my point, Dawn. There is a specific breeder who is telling people, and writing it all over the internet, that the OWNER has CAUSED problems like hip dysplasia, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and pannus. When you research and read on those disorders, the #1 dog listed is a German Shepherd. Not a GSD from XXX Kennel but a GSD in general. I wish those "kennel blind" breeders would be more supportive. It's really sad. Thank you for responding. ~Jill Friday

Well for one I would want someone to talk to me in person rather than blast me over the internet. I have had someone tell me in person when I first started breeding (a long time ago) that 2 out of 10 puppies came down with allergies. I never blamed it on something else, or someone else.  Instead I gave him (the dog in question) to a family member that has not used him for breeding. This litter was an accidental breeding, but it let me know not to use the male in question.  I think some might become defensive if you try to blast them over the internet verses trying to talk and work with them in person. Every breeder is different just like every dog, etc, so some might handle it in a different manner, but I personally would rather be told in person verses the internet, so I can take care of the problem if there is one. JMHO.

My dog, from a breeder I will not name, has SIBO, mild EPI and lumbosacral instability. My dog has some dog/dog reactivity issues but LOVES LOVES LOVES people and kids!! She's afraid of noises, plastic bags and the vacuum. She's been out socialized all over creation from the day she came home but still she has some nerve issues (as determined by the SchH trainer we were going to in Philadelphia). I contacted the breeder via their e-mail address. This person was extremely hurtful and accusatory. It's the luck of the draw and I'm doing everything in my power to keep my dog healthy and happy. She eats a specialized diet with supplements. She goes for acupuncture. She enjoys tracking (has her AKC TD) and herding (has her AKC PT and 1 leg toward the AHBA HCT). We've stopped training for now due to her back but the holistic vet said we can go back later in the spring and try again. I had tried to obtain financial compentation for my dog as we have spent thousands on her in 3 years but the breeder feels that I have bashed and flamed them - NEVER have I used the dogs kennel name - but I am starting to think the breeder is "kennel blind" as discussed above. I rarely post here but I wanted to jump in as a friend who has a dog from the same kennel is being attacked in the pedigree comments section. I would think a breeder would want to know what is happening in their lines. I know for a fact there are 2 pannus dogs, 3 EPI dogs and 3 SIBO dogs in these lines (again NO WHERE in this post have I mentioned the kennel name). I would think the breeder would be thankful that the owners want to let them know and be thankful that the owners are taking such good care of the dogs.

JenM66, I'm sorry you're going through this. My dog has moderate hip dysplasia. He was given mild dysplasia when he had his OFA evaluation but recently he's been slowing down and when I took him to the veternarian, they told me his hips have gotten worse. My breeder said it is because I let him jump off the couch and use the stairs. HUH?? I know we can't change the world but I know there are many breeders on this forum so hopefully our voices will be heard and they will think twice about how they treat their customers. Good luck to you and your dog. ~Jill Friday

JenM66, and Jill, I am sorry that you ran into breeder's like this. It is a shame in my opinion that they don't just open their eye's and take care of the problems they have with their breedings. This is one reason the GSD is becoming what it is today.

Jill, off the subject but hwat do you have your dog on for his hips? My 11 year old has severe arthritis and I have her on Perna which is all natural. It has done wonders for her pain, etc. No more whining for her.

Kelly, thank you for your concern. I get the giant bottles of gluc/chond at the BX - my husband is stationed at Minot. Can you give me a link to purchase it on-line? Other than slowing down Thor doesn't seem like he's in pain or any other problems. He's a stoic boy, no whining from him :) ~Jill Friday

One of my favorite pastimes is to go to a conformation show, sit on the sidelines and strike up a conversation with someone who is also showing.  I always determine that this person does or does not have a dog in the ring first and then ask which dog he/she thinks the judge will put up and why.  I always pick out a different dog and have that person tell me why my pick won't be put up versus the dog he/she picked.  Almost always the answer has to do with the judge more so than the dogs.  One breeder I spoke to made it very clear he would never show a dog under a particular judge because that judge didn't like "his" type.  Didn't have have anything to do with a fault or so he said.  Since I don't know squat about breeding and just know what I like I couldn't tell you what was different about his dogs.  But despite running into kennel blind breeders this pastime of mine does help me learn.  Regardless of whom I target and what dog I choose I am getting an education.  Most people are very helpful once they determine I am not showing a dog so therefore no competition.  They point out angulation, hocks, ears, shoulders, coat, movement and tell me to compare it to the one they say will win.  Sometimes they get it right, sometimes I do.  It's been a long time since I've had a chance to indulge myself but there is a show coming up the first weekend in April...maybe I'll go check it out.

I got my girls Perna at www.webvitamins.com but if you google it you might fine a cheaper price some where else. I get the Perna Plus which has the Glucosamine and the MSM in with the Perna. It is great stuff, at least for her. I've tried sooo many different things on her that did not work. This Perna does for her.

Again I am sorry the way the breeder's had dealt with their situation with the both of you.  Just know that all breeder's are not this way.
Kel
