Hello everyone,

I would like to find someone in Missouri to tattoo my male GSD. He is 19 months old and I really would like this done for showing and breeding internationally if I am stationed in Germany. Serious inquiries only please. I am stationed in Ft Leonard Wood , Missouri.

I would think that at this age a Vet would have to do so. It could harm his cartlidge? I have never had to cross that path as all of mine had it young or I didnt worry,or just chipped them.

He is chipped...I just wanted it done because it is easier for the shows....plus he has to have it for breeding in Germany. I have called around to different vet also. Looks like I may have to drive to Illinois.

Look at large animal (cattle) vets.  They tattoo the cattle for ID.

No ear tattoo.   Nicole is correct. Have it done in the flank.

Teach the dog to jump up, paws on shoulders, when showing the tattoo in the trial.

Are you a USA club member?  If you are then please check the website, there are some club breedwardens up there that can help you out.  At 19 months they will have to meet you at a vet so the dog can be sedated, but they will do that for members.

diangelo,
your dog will have to have a lot more than an ear tattoo to be used for breeding in Germany, but that is besides the point.
The SV is in the process of changing the system and in the future, there will be microchipping instead of tattooing anyway.
The problem is that the American chips are not readable in Germany and vice versa. I really wish there was a universal microchip they all could agree on using. I am in the process of getting all my dogs chipped in Germany when they go over there for titles and showing , so I am prepared for this. In addition, EU requirements are (starting at January 2010) that only microchipped dogs can enter the EU countries. Right now, they are still in transition. The vet office at Frankfurt Airport has all kinds of scanners and will be able to read our chips which were implanted here, but not the SV judges who will start carrying scanners at show, trials, and breed  surveys in the foreseeable future.
BTW, it should be against the law that any reputable breeder will sell a puppy without permanently identifying it! JMHO!

Thank you. I have contacted the SV...Ms Sabine and she is helping me with the the breeding process in Germany. I do have a lot to do but I have to learn the process if I am going to be legit in my travels. I do appreciate the responses. They do help alot. I did get the 15 digit microchip in my male. It read the universal scanner with no problems. I am being mentored by a couple of kennels in Germany and the Netherlands....so I am on the right track. Yes...I am still a novice. I ask a lot of questions that sound stupid to some but I have to ask.

Avid has a Eurochip that can be read by most countries in Europe. Definately can be used in Germany.
