Anyone know a good (preferably inexpensive) supplement to add fat to a dogs diet?

My Mal does much better on Lamb diets but they do not have the fat content. Need to add a little to keep the weight on her.

Thanks

how about grease that comes off meat when you cook it?
do you eat bacon?  she would really enjoy bacon grease over her food :)

or throw her a chicken leg quarter, raw with skin

Salmon oil.  Adds good fats and great for the coat. Don't know about cheap though. I would stay away from vegetable oils. If salmon's too pricey, try plain fish oil instead.  Or you could add ground 80/20 beef for the animal fat.

I give all of my dogs a squirt of vegetable (canola or olive) oil on their food every day.  Or you can buy the oil-based coat supplements like lubraderm - basically the same thing but vegetable oil is less pricey :)

I tried salmon oil years ago and all of my dogs got the itchies.  Don't know why.  I do give fish-oil capsules though.

Just give her some cottage cheese once in a while 4%, not the low fat variety.

Interesting, Molly. I've never heard of a dog itching because of salmon oil, but I believe you. I used to give one GSD salmon oil to keep her from itching. :)

Well, GARD, lots of good suggestions here and you'll probably get more.

I use cheese a lot, as treats and as an additive to my dog food.  Craft singles are handy.
Meat grease is ok and I do use bacon grease but it has a lot of salt in it.     I add canned salmon but I don't think of it as fattening.   Once in a while I will get fat scrap from the butcher but there is a line of others with the same idea.
Hot dogs are pretty fattening.

The head vet at Auburn University reccomends Safflower oil... about 2 tblsp. It works wonders for us.

I use extra virgin olive oil. It is loaded with the good fats and have healthy benefits. Antioxidants are good for humans too. Bacon grease...I love bacon but my blood pressure cannot handle it.  hahahahahaha

Just go to the dang butcher and ask if you can buy some fat off of him. I can get it at the grocery store down here.
