Hello. I live in Sc where it is nice and warm. Apparently the flies here think so too. I used to have a Shepherd years ago where the flies used to bite his ears like mad. I now have 3 import puppies taht are 3 months old and the flies are just now returning as well as the crazy fire ants. The Fire Ants, i know how to deal with them, Have been for years. Now my puppies go outside from 9 am to about 6. I don't want to see their ears bitten by flies. Anyone have a good cure for this. They were just at the vet and my mind had a brain fart and I forgot to ask him or say something. I go back in April but wanted some kind of prevention till then. A friend who raises horses says to use a powder that is for horses. This scares me as its for horses. It doesn't say anywhere perfectly safe for dogs and I just don't like to use chemicals like taht if I can help it. They are on advantix but that for fleas and mites. Any suggestions would help

SWAT from the feed store, plain old Vaseline, or a good fly repellent.
Best cure is don't leave them out when the flies are out.

I have a friend who swears by Bug Off Garlic (powder or capsules).... you can order it from www.springtimeinc.com You can also check around for fly traps - any place that sells horse supplies should have them. They are icky to deal with, but better that than fly strike on your dogs ears.......

Catawba, NC here.....

my experience with those little tiny naggers are that they like to go more at the privats of the dogs then at the ears. K9Advantix is a good choice. I use mosquito spray for children with deeth. This was the only thing that kept them away from the dogs. Sprayed a little at the privats especial where the skin was showing. I did not experience any side effects from licking or so.

I tried a lot of other things, this was the only one that ever worked. For the ears you could spray on the hands and then rub it a little on the ears, so you dont get it into their eyes.

Actually Catawba, I was born and raised in the south and still live down here.
I know all about the hot humid summers, the yellow flies, deer flies, ticks, mosquitoes and godawful sand fleas.
I don't have fire ants but am fortunate that way.

You powder may be Blue Kote. Hard to say since there's so many fly powders for horses. Yep, I have them too.

I still stand by plain old vaseline on the ear tips or SWAT especially if they've already been bitten. EQyss marigold extract works as a decent fly repellent without the chemicals.

None of my dogs have ever had fly strike. I keep them in at dawn and dusk and they come in if they've been swimming. Water seems to attract the flies. Vaseline and spray before we go hunting or out in the field. I have had a few fosters (dog, cat and horse) with horribly bitten ears. SWAT and keeping the ears clean works every time to help heal it up.

This is from last year. Its the best thing I have ever used! We house about 30 dogs at most times. The flies drop right when they touch it.
